What are the weight and piece concepts?

In accordance with international regulations, your baggage allowances will be defined either by how many pieces of luggage or by the total weight of luggage you can travel with. The rules depend on where you’re traveling to and from.

Piece concept:

If you’re traveling to or from North, Central, or South America, or you are traveling from Africa, you’ll need to follow the rules of the piece concept.

Under the piece concept, your baggage allowance is defined in terms of how many pieces you can travel with and the maximum weight and dimensions of each piece of luggage.

The total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 inches). You’ll be charged an additional fee for any individual items with dimensions exceeding 150 cm (59 inches), up to a maximum of 300 cm (118 inches). Individual items with total dimensions greater than 300 cm (118 inches) can’t be checked as baggage and will need to be sent as cargo or freight.

If you check in two pieces of luggage in any of our three classes, the total combined dimensions of both pieces may not exceed 300 cm (118 inches).

Weight concept:

Under the weight concept, which governs baggage allowances everywhere else, the amount of luggage you may travel with is defined in terms of its weight. The standard free baggage allowance for all other Emirates destinations is 50 kg for First Class and 40 kg for Business Class. For Economy Class passengers, baggage allowance depends on the type of fare purchased. Special Economy fares get 20 kg, Special Saver and Flex fares get 30 kg, and Flex Plus fares get 35 kg.

Economy Class customers traveling to and from Argentina (excluding flights between Argentina and Brazil) can check in two bags, each weighing up to 23 kg.

Different Economy Class baggage allowances apply if your ticket was issued before June 20, 2016

Please use our baggage calculator to check your allowance.

Under the weight concept, passengers in all cabin classes can carry up to 10 checked bags, as long as their total weight falls within the allowance.

If your itinerary includes flights operated by other airlines, different baggage rules may apply for these flights—learn more.
