Flights to New York

The Big Apple has it all. Once your flight to New York lands, stroll around downtown, the center of world finance on Wall Street, and Ground Zero, or venture out amid the commerce and chaos of Times Square in midtown.

Around you, there’s the green spaces of Central Park and the posh homes of the Upper West Side further up the island of Manhattan. And don’t forget Brooklyn, the spot in New York where culture culminates; there, you’ll find everything from the best new bands to the coolest new restaurants.

It's no wonder legendary directors such as Nora Ephron and Woody Allen found inspiration here. From the yellow cabs hustling from street to street, to the Manhattan skyline dominated by the Empire State Building, New York feels familiar even if you’re visiting for the first time.

People from all cultures walk the streets or ride the subway system, chatting in different languages; some are on vacation, some on business trips, some traveling to and from home. It's a diverse and welcoming place.

Because of the city’s cosmopolitan nature, you'll find a huge variety of cuisines here. You can get pretty much anything that takes your fancy, from delectable French food to cheap and cheerful dim sum. And of course, there are plenty of opportunities to grab a slice of pizza. Just ask the locals; they’ll have strong opinions about where to get the best pie.

It’s that incredible pride in their home that really gives the city an edge. New Yorkers are opinionated, sure, but also knowledgeable and proud to tell you their story. Be sure to rub shoulders with as many locals as you can. The range of accommodation from which to base your own New York story is extreme, from quirky hostels in Brooklyn to lavish Central Park–facing brand hotels. So what are you waiting for?

What to do in New York

Discover natural beauty in the Garden State

Fly to EWR and visit the Jersey Shore for a day of lounging and swimming. New Jersey has 141 miles of stunning coastline, and it isn’t called the Garden State for no reason. There’s an abundance of lush nurseries, vineyards, and orchards to explore. Or you can take in breathtaking views by hiking the 2,180-mile Appalachian Trail.

Walk the Williamsburg Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge might be more iconic, but the Williamsburg Bridge has brilliant views without the crowds, combining lower Manhattan with the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. You could even take the subway to the Williamsburg side of the bridge, then zigzag back and forth between Brooklyn and Manhattan on all three bridges (about 10km).

Where to eat in New York

The Spotted Pig (International)

New York City gastropubs are some of the best in the world, and the Spotted Pig is NYC's original and the best. The food is a blend of English, Californian and Mediterranean, but with influences from all over the globe. In that way, the Spotted Pig represents New York City perfectly.

The Cecil (Afro/Asian/American)

This lively restaurant is the first in New York to serve up Afro/Asian/American fusion food. If you think that’s a mouthful, just try the oxtail dumplings or the fried guinea hen, both of which pay homage to the restaurant's Harlem roots. A hidden gem.

Mission Cantina (Mexican)

Danny Bowien, the man behind the hit Mission Chinese Food, has brought a touch of Mexico City to New York. He describes the menu as whimsical, and the restaurant is somehow relaxing and chaotic at the same time. If you’re looking for somewhere seriously cool, this Lower East Side eatery is the place to go.

Places to stay in New York

Wythe Hotel

This stylish hotel actually used to be a factory, and you can see hints of its past in the authentic fixtures and the exposed beams. It’s been thoroughly modernised now though, with gorgeous rooms, a screening theatre and the ever-so-fancy Reynard restaurant. Wear your best threads for this trendy Williamsburg spot.

The Standard High Line

This 18-storey building towers over the High Line, offering 360-degree views across Manhattan and over the Hudson River. The Standard Grill is popular with the city's young folk.

The Plaza Hotel

This luxury hotel is affectionately remembered for housing Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2. And it’s no wonder, with untapped access to his parents’ credit card, the scamp chose this beautiful spot.
