Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is Zanzibar’s main airport, situated on the west of Unguja Island. While there are fewer transport options than Munich Airport, reaching your destination won’t take long. Taxis and pre-arranged transfers are the most efficient – but you can also take a more traditional ‘dala dala’, a van or small minibus used by the locals.
The drive to Zanzibar City, Unguja Island’s largest city, from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport takes between 10 – 20 minutes. The popular towns of Bwejuu and Paje on the east coast can be reached in just over an hour, while it’s an hour and a half to the nightlife hotspot of Nungwi on the northern tip of the island. The rural setting of Kizimkazi, in the south, is also an hour and a half drive from the airport.
The archipelago of Zanzibar is a glorious combination of powdery white-sand beaches, lush forests and brilliant turquoise water. In addition to its abundant natural beauty, Zanzibar poses a fantastic cultural scene, with a diverse array of influences from across the world. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town is a bustling maze of alleyways, marketplaces and stunning architecture.
