Flights to Bali

There’s more to this Indonesian destination than its stunning good looks. Venture beyond the sunbeds, lounges and nightlife venues, or the chic shops of Seminyak, and you’ll find a diverse and fascinating culture. Visit Bali to explore ancient temples, mesmerising music and dance performances, and a thriving local art scene.

Where to book your hotel in Bali depends entirely on the type of trip you’re after. Most travellers choose from the larger resorts to the south of the island. Kuta Beach tends to draw the party-going crowds, for sunbathing and water sports during the day and socialising all night. Nusa Dua is a more sedate area known for its luxury hotels and high-end lounges and restaurants, so it’s perfect for a romantic break in Bali and a popular choice with honeymooners.

If you’d rather spend your holiday soaking up some culture than some rays, then make Ubud your base. Located in central Bali, this charming town was immortalised in Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling memoir Eat Pray Love, but it’s actually been drawing backpackers and culture vultures for decades. This is the best place to see traditional Balinese dance and pick up some local arts and crafts. It’s also a fantastic wellness destination, with an abundance of yoga studios, meditation classes, and vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from.

A little further afield – just a short boat ride east – you’ll find the Gili Islands, a tiny archipelago where cars and motorbikes are banned, and little shacks line white sandy beaches.

What to do in Bali

Take a day trip to Gili Trawangan

If the bustle of Bali gets too much, a day trip to the nearby Gili Islands will deliver you to a much slower pace of life. Gili Trawangan is a true paradise; peaceful (there are no cars allowed) with flawless beaches and plenty of opportunities for snorkelling, surfing, diving and sunbathing. Be sure to check local agencies for the fast boat schedule, and check out the accommodation at Gili Eco Villas.

Soak in the healing waters of Banjar Hot Springs

A visit to the Banjar Hot Springs, also known as Air Panas, should be on everyone’s Bali itinerary. Located in the heart of the jungle, visitors can bathe in the hot green pools of water, which is said to have healing properties. Look out for the eight stone-carved dragons.

Where to eat in Bali

The Pirates Bay (International)

This beach side gem might be the best family-friendly restaurant in Bali, thanks to its novelty structure – a pirate boat with tree houses and climbing frames where kids can play while the adults relax and take in the views. Plus, the food is perfect for fussy eaters, with fast food staples like burgers, pasta, fries and milkshakes.

Restaurant Locavore (Modern European)

Locavore just might be Bali’s hippest restaurant. Chefs Eelke Plasjmeijer and Ray Adriansyah take the freshest, finest local ingredients and transform them into high-end works of art, but served in a casual, contemporary setting. Highlights include the hot consommé with tomato sorbet and the passion fruit tart.

Mozaic

If you’re celebrating a special occasion in Bali, book a table at the award-winning Mozaic. Located in peaceful Ubud, the food combines the exotic ingredients of Indonesia with French techniques. Dinner is served in Mozaic’s romantic garden at candlelit tables under the stars.
