Flights to Lisbon

In Portugal’s stunning capital, you can easily find yourself visiting centuries-old cathedrals during the day and dining out in Michelin-starred restaurants at night. So if you’re looking for a travel destination that has something for everyone, flights to Lisbon will get you there.

Lisbon’s excellent restaurant scene makes it a foodie heaven, and the seafood in particular is excellent. Even if you’re not a fan of fish, you’ll find something to whet your appetite. You might be dining at the famous Belcanto restaurant or picking up some local produce at markets such as Mercado da Ribeira. Just make sure you round off your meal with one of the city’s famously sweet custard tarts.

When it comes to nightlife, there’s plenty on offer and Lisbon’s residents like to stay out late. After dinner, head for Bairro Alto, a favourite haunt of the city’s night owls. This residential neighbourhood comes alive after dark with cool cafes and lounges.

But it’s not all about modern attractions. Lisbon ranks as the second oldest capital city in Europe after Athens and has a rich history. Evidence of its heritage is everywhere, with the 16th century Jerónimos Monastery and the historical Belém Tower being just two of the attractions worth adding to your itinerary.

And those are merely the manmade wonders – Lisbon is a city of natural beauty too. For hiking and walking, head for the natural parks of Sintra and Arrábida. Or, for a more relaxing experience, look to the coast. Lisbon’s urban beaches are some of the best in Europe.

What to do in Lisbon

Go surfing

Lisbon is popular among Europe’s surfing community and there are plenty of schools to choose from, with many offering accommodation. Check out Cascais Surf School and Camp, which offers private and group lessons in Carcavelos, Guincho and Praia Grande.

Eat at Mercado da Ribeira

One of the best ways to sample local cuisine when visiting a new city is by heading to the local markets, and the Mercado da Ribeira is no exception. Set aside a few hours to browse the stalls of fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood. The tinned sardines, local cheeses and artisan chocolates are all worth taking home.

Visit Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower

Belém is home to two of Lisbon’s biggest attractions – Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Both date back to the 1500s and have been declared Unesco World Heritage Sites. The latter is particularly stunning; the monks who lived here were tasked with praying for the safety of sailors.

Where to eat in Lisbon

Café Buenos Aires (Argentinian)

A visit to this charming Argentinian restaurant feels like being in someone’s dining room. Decorated in a style best described as Boho-chic, Café Buenos Aires is a lively spot that’s popular with the locals. It might feel crowded and noisy at times, but that’s all part of the charm. Needless to say, the steak is amazing.

Pastéis de Belém (Dessert)

Tourists come to this cafe for one reason and one reason only: desserts. Specifically, Portugal’s famous custard tarts, which were invented in the nearby monastery in the early 19th century. Sweet, flaky pastry with a creamy filling, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar – do not leave Lisbon without trying this treat.

Sol e Pesca

This quirky fishing tackle shop and cafe only has one dish on the menu – tinned fish tapas. Guests choose from tins of tuna, eel, octopus and, of course, the Portuguese classic, sardines, all of which are served on corn bread. A simple, cheap treat near the seaside.
