Flights to Milan

While it may not be Italy’s capital, flights to Milan still allow visitors to pursue la dolce vita (the sweet life), whether through its lively dining and nightlife or its renowned fashion scene.

It’s a key city for the fashion industry, and the boutiques on the Quadrilatero d’Oro (Fashion Quadrangle) draw fashionistas from all over Europe. Indeed, sometimes simply stepping out on to the street and people watching provides a sartorial lesson.

But Milan is as much about culture as it is about consumption. The city is home to some spectacular architecture – the Duomo di Milano is a gothic masterpiece that’s not to be missed, and the Sforza Castle is also worth adding to your list. West of the Duomo lies the Museo Archeologico, where you can learn more about the city’s history.

One of the most famous sights in the city is Leonardo Da Vinci’s mural The Last Supper, at the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Plan ahead by booking tickets in advance – the basilica attracts hordes of tourists and viewing time is limited to 15 minutes. You’ll also be moved by the music at Teatro alla Scala, the world-famous opera house at the Piazza della Scala.

Like Italy’s other famous destinations, Milan is home to some of Europe’s best restaurants. There’s an emphasis on meat and seafood (although vegetarians are increasingly well catered for). You shouldn’t leave without trying the most famous local dishes – risotto and veal.

What to do in Milan

Take a trip to Oltrepò Pavese

If you fancy getting out of the city, the region of Oltrepò Pavese will provide a welcome change of scene. It takes just under an hour to get there but it’s well worth it for the fresh air, rolling green hills and some of the best food you’ll eat in Italy. Visit Agriturismo Bagarellum for Sunday lunch.

Shop at Quadrilatero d’Oro

A trip to Italy’s fashion capital wouldn’t be complete without indulging in some retail therapy. The Quadrilatero d’Oro is a shopaholic’s paradise of designer stores including Gucci, Versace, Missoni and Armani. A good time to visit would be during Milan Fashion Week, when many stores have enticing offers.

See opera at La Scala

Tickets for La Scala (or Teatro alla Scala) are like gold dust, so you’ll need to book months in advance. If you’re out of luck, ask your hotel concierge. Failing that, book a tour with the museum next door, which will get you access to the luxury theatre boxes as long as there isn’t a show or rehearsal going on.

Where to eat in Milan

Ristorante Ribot (Italian)

This understated and elegant restaurant is perfect for a date, a meet-up with friends or even a relaxed lunch by yourself. It’s been feeding hungry locals and visitors for more than three decades. Ribot is a carnivore’s dream, with plenty of meat-heavy dishes, although the risotto is equally sublime.

Mangiari di Strada (street food)

Dining in Milan doesn’t get much more informal (or delicious) than this. It’s a laidback spot with outdoor tables and chalkboard menus, where you can grab a quick sandwich on the go for lunch. For all its informality, there’s no sacrifice when it comes to the quality of ingredients, from cured meats to mozzarella.

Joia (Vegetarian)

In meat-loving Milan, good vegetarian cuisine isn’t always easy to find, which makes Michelin-starred restaurant Joia even more of a gem. Fronted by the talented Swiss/Italian Chef Pietro Leemann, who takes a fun, playful approach to presentation, even the most steak-loving carnivores will be impressed by the food here.
