Presidential Suite, Waldorf Astoria, New York

26 September 2016

Words: Andrew Nagy / Images: Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts

In days gone by, if you wanted to stay in the Presidential Suite of the Waldorf Astoria you were subject to rigorous background checks and barred from even photographing the place. Nowadays, thankfully, it’s fair game to anybody who can negotiate the rate.

If you’re able to do so, you’ll find yourself in a stunning suite modelled on the Georgian style of the White House. It’s for good reason that US presidents over the past eight decades have stayed in this Art Deco icon on Park Avenue.

Whether you’re sitting behind General Douglas MacArthur’s desk, on JFK’s rocking chair, or in the 10-seater dining room, history weighs heavy here, and anybody who stays becomes part of a very exclusive club; one featuring kings, queens and a host of superstars.

The largest hotel in the world on its opening in 1931, it remains a temple to the swagger of the city, and while the Cole Porter Suite might trump it for size, you’d be hard pressed to find a place in NYC with even half as much regal style.
