Flights to Tunis

On the map it may look like a little sliver of land by the Mediterranean Sea, but don’t let the size of Tunisia’s capital fool you. Right from the moment your flight to Tunis lands, this tranquil yet bustling city packs a punch.

It was only in 1956 that Tunis achieved independence as the capital of Tunisia, and today there are a number of global influences evident in this North African city, including Spanish, French and German.

This is particularly reflected in the new areas, where the streets have been likened to those in Paris or Barcelona. It's no surprise, then, that Tunis is one of the most modern cities in the North African and Arab world, not to mention one of the most relaxed.

Over on the opposite side of the city is The Medina of Tunis, now a Unesco World Heritage Site. This network of narrow alleyways featuring mosques, palaces and souks is where you’ll be able to explore the history of Tunis and meet its local people. It’s dominated by the city’s great mosque, Al-Zaytuna, as well as the beautiful Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul. The district is also the city’s traditional shopping area, with every type of souvenir available.

Look out for other notable landmarks including the two sea gates: Bab El-Jedid Gate and Bab El-Bahr Gate; as well as the noble houses of Dar Hussein, Dar Ben Abdallah and Dar Lasram. Apart from culture, one of the best things about Tunis is the food, and there are a lot of places to eat. The locals savour their traditional cuisine, which can be found in a plethora of restaurants across the city. So sit back, relax and enjoy the Tunisian way of life during your stay.

What to do in Tunis

Browse the souks

Tunis’ Medina is known for its colourful souks that sell everything from spices to kitchenware. Start at Bab El-Bahr, but avoid the main tourist areas and go off the beaten track into the more tucked-away alleyways. This is where you’ll catch the city’s real working market.

Explore the city’s history

It’s well worth taking half a day out to walk around the ancient areas of the city. The highlight of your tour should be Al-Zaytuna Mosque, the largest Muslim place of worship in Tunisia, which dates back to the eighth century. Also worth seeing is the National Bardo Museum (or le Musée National du Bardo), which is home to a fascinating collection of Roman mosaics.

Experience a hammam

No trip to Tunis would be complete without a scrub in one of the city’s many hammams. These traditional public baths have stood the test of time and visiting them continues to be a ritual in the country. Most locations offer options for both men and women (they are separate).

Where to eat in Tunis

Fondouk El Attarine (Tunisian)

Years ago, Fondouk El Attarine was a caravan pit-stop used by travelling salesmen on long journeys. Nowadays, this venue brings together a luxury souk selling artisan jewellery and an elegant restaurant serving fresh and healthy Tunisian food. Go in the evening for live music.

Chez Slah (International)

A favourite among locals, Chez Slah is tucked away but is definitely worth seeking out. Always packed, wait for a table if you can’t get one immediately. The quality of the meat and seafood dishes is second to none.

Le Rest’ô de Villa Didon (Mediterranean)

For excellent Mediterranean cuisine paired with magnificent views of the city, Le Rest’ô de Villa Didon is well worth splashing out on. With Philippe Starck furnishings and excellent service, this is where the local crowd likes to see and be seen. Leave room for dessert – their vanilla cheesecake is delicious.
