Flights to Nice

When you board a flight to Nice, one of Europe's most photogenic destinations, you immediately feel more glamorous. The city is a gateway to Cannes, St Tropez and Monte Carlo, and it has a port to make even the wealthiest boat-owners blush. It conjures up images of beautiful coastlines, with beautiful people sunning themselves at sea.

Nice is rightly known for its stunning Promenade des Anglais, gently curving around the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). While you sip a coffee on a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the sparkling blue Mediterranean, it’s tempting to think life can’t get much better than a stay in this French city.

And yet there’s so much more to Nice than the historical flamboyance of the Hôtel Le Negresco or the multimillion-dollar yachts moored in the port. Vieux Nice (the old town) is crammed with history and character – the architecture dates back to the 17th century – and a wander among its markets, shops and churches feels like stepping back in time. Meanwhile, the bright Mediterranean weather has inspired artists such as Matisse and Picasso.

The beautiful climate means this is an outdoor city for everyone – the promenade is home to skaters as much as well-dressed couples on their way to one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants.

Encouragingly, for all its genteel history, Nice isn’t resting on its laurels. The new Promenade du Paillon is an urban park in the centre of the city and shopping has become a major attraction, with everything from small boutiques in Vieux Nice to high-end couturiers on Rue Paradis and major brands on Avenue Jean Médecin.

No wonder, then, that after Paris it’s the most visited city in France.

What to do in Nice

Find a private beach

Treat yourself to some luxury downtime at one of Nice’s private beaches, with waiters at your service, impressive dining options and, often, hessian-matted walkways to the water. Try the beach at Hôtel Beau Rivage for the classic luxe experience.

Explore the old town

Yes, the tightly-packed streets of Vieux Nice can be a bit crowded with vendors and visitors, but there’s something really exciting and vibrant about stopping for a coffee at one of the many cafes and watching the world go by. Get up early and visit the flower market in the Cours Saleya market, a wonderful assault on the senses.

Visit an art gallery

Nice is an outdoorsy place but a visit to one of its art galleries is a must. Above the town on Cimiez Hill is the brilliant Musée Matisse, a fascinating look at the life of this unique French artist. Then there's the Musée des Beaux-Arts, an ornate building that houses Rodin’s famous sculpture, The Kiss.

Where to eat in Nice

La Pescheria (Italian)

Italy is, of course, just a short distance along the Cote d’Azur, so Giuseppe Mandaradoni’s Italian-infused menu in the stylish yet comfortable surroundings of the Boscolo Exedra Hotel is a good fit. But don’t come expecting simply pizzas and pastas – La Pescheria is very much about fresh food cooked in Italian style, like the orange duck breast with honey, thyme, fennel and grapes.

Le Chantecler (French)

Michelin-starred Chef Denis Rieubland says the food at this restaurant is “inspired by Provence, with the respect of its products and traditions”. With traditional French haute cuisine served in elegant, chandelier-laden surroundings, this is a great pick for a special occasion.

Le Bistrot du Port (French/Seafood)

Nice’s Michelin-starred restaurants are a big draw, but sometimes you want to enjoy a good meal in a more relaxed setting. Le Bistrot du Port is just the place for that. There's still a wow factor – views of multimillion-dollar yachts in the port – and Chef Jose Orsini uses the day’s catch to make simple but tasty dishes.
