Flights to Johannesburg

Johannesburg, or Joburg for short, has a rich history built on a 19th century gold rush. The discovery of the precious metal brought prospectors and jobseekers from across the globe looking for a piece of the action. Today, travellers take flights to Johannesburg to dine in exceptional restaurants, party in vibrant nightlife venues or shop at fashionable boutiques in Sandton and Rosebank.

The city has something for everyone. Not only is Joburg South Africa’s fashion capital, it also boasts the largest man-made forest in the world with more than 10 million trees. Be sure to bring your camera: beautiful, sunny days are pierced with thunderstorms that attract photographers from across the globe attempting to capture the dramatic forks of lightning.

Johannesburg also offers the chance to uncover South Africa's history at its Apartheid Museum, while Nelson Mandela studied law in the city before embarking on his exceptional life journey.

Like most of South Africa, a love of rugby permeates the city. Wear red and white to show support for the Lions, the local team who play at the magnificent Ellis Park, a venue that holds just under 60,000 fans. Grab a stick of biltong (dry cured meat), a refreshing drink and watch the entertainment.

While the dining scene is diverse, meat is definitely the star of many South African dishes. Locals debate about where to find the best steak, but whatever choice you make it will rarely be disappointing. After dinner, soak up the city’s famous nightlife – head to Black Orchid for a VIP experience or Sophiatown for a jazz fix. And when the partying is over, the range of lodging means you can retire to your favourite hotel, be that a rustic lodge or a five-star boutique.

Visit the Apartheid Museum

Without doubt the must-visit site in Johannesburg is the Apartheid Museum. Opened in 2001, it tackles the turbulent history of South Africa’s struggle with race relations. Exhibitions include pieces created by historians, filmmakers and designers. While sobering, it also evokes the sense of coming to terms with the past and moving forward.

Shop at Sandton City

Johannesburg’s culture demands you spend some quality time in one of its impressive malls. One of the best is Sandton City, where luxury brand boutiques are as tempting as the many food options. Shop until you drop and then grab a thick slice of South Africa’s famous milk tart.
