It takes a pretty special hotel to make you opt for an afternoon indoors over exploring a city as beautiful as Florence, but we have to admit that we kept the place waiting in favour of the impossibly comfortable beds of the St Regis. Found in the historic heart of the city, even the hotel lobby is the sort of place you’d like to hang around for a while, filled with antique globes, stunning paintings and a team that is always on hand to help. The 19 suites are decorated in the Medicci, Fiorentino and Renaissance styles and boast stunning artworks that combine with the more contemporary touches. If you’re in a suite you’ll have a butler – perfect for when you fancy a cappuccino but can’t bring yourself to head to breakfast. If you eventually get stir crazy, head to the Winter Garden restaurant for some Michelin-starred fare, and be sure to end the day with a stroll into town, just in time for an aperativo with the locals. stregisflorence.com
