Spread across the southern slopes of the famous Himalayan mountains, Nepal is a breathtaking combination of exceptional natural beauty and rich heritage.
One of South Asia’s many gems, Nepal houses 10 of the highest mountain peaks in the world – including the imposing Mount Everest. But mesmerising snowy peaks are just a portion of the nation’s allure, with its towns and cities pulsing with life and brimming with fascinating history.
Kathmandu, the capital city, is Nepal’s cultural epicentre where thronging marketplaces and vibrant streets contrast with peaceful temples and palaces. This colourful showcase of Nepalese culture is punctuated by UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from the ethereal Pashupatinath Temple to the enchanting Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Navigate the city’s bustling streets to discover these magnificent examples of Newari architecture.
Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, two stunning Buddhist stupas on opposing sides of Kathmandu, are further UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Admire these glorious ancient sites, complete with symbolic golden spires and beautiful shrines, and learn about their origins more than 1,400 years ago.
Lumbini, south-west of Kathmandu, is another UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s steeped in Buddhism. Here you can visit the serene Maya Devi Temple, a major pilgrimage destination, and see the sacred garden and pool (Pushkarini) nearby.
In central Nepal, Pokhara is a charming city surrounded by more mesmerising landscapes. While its majestic World Peace Pagoda and captivating old town are well worth seeing, many use the city as a launchpad for taking on adrenaline-fuelled activities nearby. Zip-line at dizzying heights above tree-clad mountainsides, white water raft on the roaring Seti River or trek to Annapurna Base Camp for unforgettable panoramas.
Though Nepal is often associated with the colossal mountains on its northern border, dense forest and vast grassland covers swathes of the country. Visit the Chitwan National Park to embark on a safari and try to spot rare animals like one-horned rhinos and Bengal tigers. Shivapuri Nagarjuna National Park is closer to Kathmandu and is teeming with more incredible plants and wildlife, from monkeys and red pandas to bears and leopards.
Given Nepal’s mountainous landscapes, it’s no surprise that hearty, filling meals are a staple of the nation’s famous cuisine. Fuel up for your adventures on thukpa, a rich, comforting noodle soup with meat and vegetables, and gundruk, a vitamin-rich dish made using fermented leafy greens. For those with a sweet tooth, yomari is a delicious, steamed dumpling filled with chaku (molasses) or khuwa (condensed milk).
