Purchasing additional baggage allowance

Rates, discounts and terms and conditions displayed in this page are applicable only for additional baggage allowance purchased on or after 4 February 2019.

Baggage allowance varies depending on your route, class of travel, fare type, and Emirates Skywards membership tier. Excess baggage allowance fees are displayed in US dollars. You can pay online in most cases, at check-in desks in local currency, or pay through Emirates offices in advance as per the exchange rate on the day of purchase.

Purchase online before check-in

We offer special discounts when you purchase additional baggage allowance online using your credit card up to 4 hours before departure. Purchasing online saves you money and time at the airport. To purchase baggage online, log in to Manage your Booking using your booking reference number. Excess baggage allowance fees will be displayed and charged in your ticketed currency.

Purchase is only available for adult and child tickets, infant tickets are not eligible. Tickets must be issued by Emirates (our ticket numbers start with 176...) and flights must be operated and marketed by Emirates.

Purchase at the airport or through Emirates offices

Your baggage will be weighed at check-in and you will be able to purchase additional allowance there, if required. If you believe your baggage may exceed your base allowance, please allow for additional time and cost at check-in on the day of your flight. Alternatively, you can purchase excess baggage through your local Emirates office.

Adding additional weight

Where the baggage allowance on your ticket is based on weight (known as the weight concept), you can purchase additional kilos (kg).

With the weight concept, you can check in as many bags as you like as long as the total weight does not exceed the maximum weight for your class of travel. Each individual bag must weigh less than 32kg and the total dimensions (length + width + height) of an individual bag should not exceed 300 cm (118 inches).

If purchasing online:

You can purchase additional baggage online at discounted rates, in blocks of 5kg, up to a maximum of 25kg. Current online discount rates per passenger are:

  • 50% for the first 5kg;
  • 20% for any subsequent amount.

Adding additional pieces

Where the baggage allowance on your ticket is based on number of pieces, you can purchase additional pieces so long as the total number you travel with does not exceed 10. To find the number of pieces already included in your allowance please check your ticket or visit Manage your booking. The weight allowance for each additional piece purchased is 23kg in Economy Class, and 32kg in Business Class and First Class.

  • $200 for tickets from or to the Americas;
  • $200 for tickets with journeys originating from Africa.

If purchasing online:

Up to 3 of the additional pieces can be purchased online. These are also available at discounted rates. Online discounts per passenger are:

  • 50% for the first additional piece if you are travelling in Economy.
  • 20% for any other additional piece.

Charges for oversized and overweight pieces

If you are travelling within the allowed number of pieces, but these pieces exceed the total size and weight restrictions, the following charges apply:

Terms and conditions

General Conditions for Excess Baggage

  1. All excess baggage is carried subject to the Emirates General Conditions of Carriage for Passengers and Baggage.
  2. Any excess baggage purchased at the airport of departure or at any Emirates office is charged at standard excess baggage rates, without any online discount.
  3. Purchase is valid for the amount (piece or weight), flight and date shown on the excess baggage purchase receipt. Your purchase is also valid if you voluntarily change the date of your flight(s) or choose different flight(s) on the same sector.
  4. The maximum allowed weight per checked bag is 32 kg (70 lbs).


  1. Be aware that excess baggage fees are non-refundable, non-endorsable and non-transferable between passengers.
  2. You shall only be entitled to a refund of your excess baggage fees in the following limited cases:
    1. The relevant flight was operated by Emirates;
    2. The original Emirates flight was changed, cancelled or re-routed by Emirates and you refused the new flight proposed by Emirates; and
    3. Death or serious illness (must be proven by an acceptable certificate) of you or a member of your Immediate Family as defined within Emirates General Conditions of Carriage.
  3. You are not entitled to any refund of your excess baggage fees in the event you:
    1. You decide to travel with less baggage than the allowance you have purchased;
    2. You cancel or change your flight; or
    3. You are denied carriage in accordance with the Emirates General Conditions of Carriage for Passengers and Baggage.
