Your Emirates Journey

Restraint harnesses and devices for infants, children and adults

A restraint harness or device can be fitted to the seats to secure a passenger during the flight. We do not provide harnesses and devices on board, but you may be able to bring your own depending on the type of device. Please contact us at least 48 hours before you travel to make sure your device can be used in the approved seat location and cabin.

When to use a restraint harness

Passengers must be able to sit upright in the aircraft seat. If this isn’t possible, they must have an aviation-approved harness or restraint and travel with assistant who meets the following criteria:

  • Must be 16 years of age and above.
  • Must be physically and mentally able and can take care of the needs of the passenger including assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation.
  • Must be seated on an adjacent seat to the passenger.

If you are travelling alone and you are unable to sit upright and do not have a harness, we can arrange to accommodate a stretcher. Please contact us 48 hours before your flight.

Travelling with an assistant

If you’re travelling with a harness, you will need to fly with an assistant and complete the Medical Information form (MEDIF). Find out more about travelling with an assistant here.

Important information before you travel

  • A responsible adult or travel assistant must be seated next to the passenger using the restraint harness or device.
  • The adult or assistant is responsible for fitting the restraint harness or device and for ensuring that the passenger is seated and secured correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The passenger’s seat lap belt must be fastened securely while the restraint harness or device is also in use.
  • We will only accept restraint harnesses or devices at the airport if all conditions have been met and we confirm that it is one of the accepted harnesses or devices from the approved list.
  • When other airlines or codeshare airlines are involved in an itinerary, the regulations of the carrying airline are applicable. Please check with the carrier about their policies regarding restraint harnesses or devices before your flight.
  • If your CARES is over the maximum weight and height recommended for FAA certification, or if you are using CARES to connect to another airline, codeshare partner or US airline at an Emirates US gateway airport (including Athens International Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport), you will need to request an exemption from the FAA before your flight for onward travel to or from the US.
  • FAA certification is not applicable for use on Emirates flights. FAA regulations regarding child harness restraints do not directly apply to Emirates or our passengers. However, these limitations are covered in our GCAA approved internal risk assessment.
  • We only accept CARES and Special CARES made by Amsafe on Emirates flights.
