St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel

1 January 2015

Words: Gareth Rees / Image: Corbis Images

London has perhaps more iconic hotels than any other city in the world: The Savoy, The Langham, Claridge’s, The Ritz, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera – the list of luxurious properties with storied histories is undeniably impressive. St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, opened in 2011, is a relative newcomer, but its own story began in the golden age of grand London hotels. The hotel occupies a building designed by the great Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, which housed the Midland Grand Hotel from 1873 until 1935.

From the mid-1930s until the new millennium, the once magnificent property beside St Pancras railway station was in turn used as offices, abandoned, partially restored and used as the setting for British pop group the Spice Girls’ video for their hit Wannabe. Now Scott’s Neo-Gothic masterpiece, its striking red brick façade and majestic interior complemented by contemporary comforts and chef Marcus Wareing’s wonderful Gilbert Scott Bar and Restaurant, is back where it belongs – on a par with one of the finest hotels in one of the greatest capital cities in the world.
