The Trans Luxury Hotel in Bandung, Indonesia

24 January 2018

This six-star hotel in Bandung, Indonesia offers a hideaway from the city’s hustle and bustle

As cars crawl beneath your feet like ants from the glass-bottomed deck on the 18th floor, it will strike you that The Trans is a hotel of two halves.

On one hand, the sprawling complex offers a selection of knuckle-whitening attractions; on the other, its walls house a wealth of soothing havens, from the calming Balinese-inspired spa to the elegantly appointed rooms.

The labyrinth-like hotel seems to embody the spirit of its hometown, Bandung – the capital of West Java and Indonesia’s third largest city.

Famed for its staggering mountains and lush greenery, the picturesque spot is also teeming with humming markets, contemporary cafes and Art Deco-inspired buildings.

The Trans, however, offers a hideaway from the city’s hustle and bustle, with not a single rev from the roads’ plentiful motorbikes heard in the hotel’s rooms. As the nation’s only six-star hotel, luxury touches are second nature here, a touch of stylish black marble here, a lick of gilding there. But you could never accuse The Trans of being over-the-top; the tasteful setting encourages relaxation rather than excess, from the bath bomb nestled over the tub to the myriad artworks scattered throughout (the grandest of which is a glass dragon languidly floating from the lobby’s ceiling).

Speedy service and a pool lined with sand (imported all the way from Australia) are also hallmarks, while a fine-dining restaurant with a panoramic view of the city’s mountains is the jewel in The Trans’ crown.

And if it’s adventure you seek, allow us to show you the rollercoaster. You don't need to stray more than a few metres from your room to check out Trans Studio. Located a stone’s throw away from the hotel, this indoor theme park boasts 20 exhilarating rides, including plenty of family-friendly options. The Trans Hotel complex also features an adjoining 200-store-strong mall, so if vertical drops aren’t your thing, you can hit the shops instead.
