Flights to Moscow

The Red Square – home to Lenin’s Mausoleum, the Kremlin and the 16th century St Basil’s Cathedral – draws visitors from all over the world on flights to Moscow, and seems to reverberate with the footsteps of military parades. The centuries-old Russian capital was once the heart of the Soviet Union and evidence of this is everywhere.

However, the city is not without its modern charms. Even the Bolshoi, Moscow’s oldest theatre, has had a contemporary facelift, although it maintains its old-world charm.

Near the historic Red Square lies the GUM, a huge shopping complex where locals and residents come to splash their cash. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a bank-busting budget – you’ll need it for nights out. A huge amount has been invested into the city’s fine dining restaurants. Turandot, for example, is a must-visit eatery said to have swallowed up $40 million dollars with its interior design alone. Then there’s O2 Lounge at the Ritz, a trendy lounge with prices almost as dizzying as the views. .

Fortunately, there’s another side to the city that does not require Romanov-like riches. In recent years, Moscow residents have embraced a more outdoorsy lifestyle, and there are some lovely green spaces. At Izmailovsky Park, set in a 16th century royal estate, you can browse the market for souvenirs. Alternatively, Gorky Park, named for the Soviet era author Maxim Gorky, draws visitors and locals alike as soon as there’s a hint of sunshine.

What to do in Moscow

Explore Moscow Kremlin

One of the most recognisable sights in all of Russia, you could easily spend a whole day exploring this imposing Fortress on Borovitsky Hill. It’s hard to pick a favourite attraction, but the Armoury comes close – don’t miss the incredible diamond collection, which includes the jewels of Catherine the Great.

Skate (or stroll) at Gorky Park

Gorky Park is a space for all seasons. In summer it transforms into an on-site amusement park, complete with Ferris wheel. But the magic really happens in winter when the ponds freeze over and it becomes Europe’s biggest ice rink.

Visit Red Square

The Red Square is an absolute Moscow must-see. A visit to this icon can encompass not only the square itself but also other stunning icons. This includes the 16th century St Basil’s Cathedral, the State History Museum, the Kremlin and Lenin’s Mausoleum (which is only open on certain days – so it’s best to check ahead). You’ll also have a chance to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Once you’ve seen the sights, take a stroll along the nearby Moscow River.

Where to eat in Moscow

Turandot (Asian fusion)

Perhaps the grandest of Moscow’s restaurants, the designers of Turandot must have subscribed to the ‘go big or go home’ design ethos. As uniformed waiters serve up tasty Asian fusion cuisine, you may find yourself sharing your palatial dining room with a rotating golden peacock.

Uilliam’s (European)

Uilliam’s is a welcome break from the fancy, over-the-top dining that you find a lot in Moscow. The decor is bright and minimal, with hardwood floors, chalkboard menus and an open kitchen, giving it the feel of a quaint Parisian bistro. Serving up an eclectic European menu, it stays open well into the early hours.

Rulet (European)

This hidden gem in the trendy Tsvetnoy Bulvar area feels more like a cafe than a restaurant, but it’s still a great spot for dinner. That’s all thanks to the impeccably cooked European seasonal treats, from the crispy duck confit to the rich tiramisu. Plus, the prices are very reasonable for the area.
