Airport newsIn the summer of 2010, the airport management announced that it is to develop a new 20-gate passenger concourse. Completion is earmarked for 2020. A tunnel between Lantau Island and northern Hong Kong is due to be constructed by 2018.
Transfer between terminalsA free automated people mover train runs between the departures area of Terminal 1 to the SkyPier ferry terminal and from Terminal 2 to the gates. Electric vehicles can also transport passengers around the terminals for a fee.
Driving directionsFrom Hong Kong Island, follow road signs to Western Harbour Tunnel. Once out of the tunnel, drive along the West Kowloon Expressway; follow airport road signs and cross the Tsing Ma Bridge to the airport island, Chek Lap Kok. Then continue along North Lantau Highway to reach the airport.
Car rentalDriving is chaotic in Hong Kong, and self-drive car hire is rare. Most people wishing to rent exclusive-use vehicles rather than using taxis opt for chauffeur-driven cars; these are available from Trans-Island (tel: 3193 9333;, and Parklane Limousine Service (tel: 2730 0662; Both companies have desks in the arrivals areas.
Public transport and taxisBus: Public buses depart from the Ground Transportation Centre and from near to car parks 1 and 2. Buses are operated by Citybus (tel: 2873 0818;, KMB (tel: 2745 4466; and New Lantao Bus Company (tel: 2984 9848; Night buses take over after midnight.There are 12 Airbus routes to various parts of Hong Kong, including North Point Ferry Pier, Hung Hom station and Lam Tin station. Frequent external bus services are also available.A 24-hour Discovery Bay Airbus service, operated by DB Transit (tel: 2987 0208) connects the airport to Discovery Bay.
Shuttle: Six airport shuttle routes connect to various points in Hong Kong.
Coach: Cross-border coaches, run by five operators, offer regular services between the airport and major Guangdong cities in mainland China. A valid travel document for entry to mainland China is required.
Taxi: Taxis are readily available from the Ground Transportation Centre. There are separate queues for various services: urban taxis are red and serve almost all destinations in the city; New Territories taxis are green; and Lantau taxis are blue. Taxis to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon take about an hour (subject to traffic) and cost around HK$300.
Rail: The MTR Corporation Airport Express Line (tel: 2881 8888; operates trains that leave the airport for downtown Hong Kong (journey time: 24 minutes; fare: HK$100) stopping at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations, where check-in and free porter services are available. The station is located in the Ground Transportation Centre between the passenger terminals.
Water: TurboJet (tel: 2215 3232; provides high-speed ferry services between the airport’s SkyPier and six points in the Pearl River Delta (Dong Guan Humen, Macau, Zhuhai Jiuzhou, Zhongshan, Shenzhen Fuyong and Shenzhen Shekou). Tickets are available from the ferry transfer desk in the arrivals hall. An Automated People Mover connects the Terminal 1 arrivals hall with the ferry terminal.
Car parkingThere is one undercover multi-storey car park (car park 4) and three open-air ground level car parks (car parks 1, 2, and 3) at the airport. Car parks 1, 2 and 4 are short-term, while the long-term car park 3 is currently closed for construction work – part of car park 2 is designated for long-term use during this work. Complimentary 30-minute parking is available in car parks 1 and 4. Further parking information is available from the airport parking office (tel: 2183 4360).
Information and help desksThe Customer Service Centres, which are open daily from 0530 to midnight, can be found in the departure areas of both terminals. Multimedia booths are located in the arrivals halls, with interactive information and touch-screen maps. There are dozens of 24-hour help phones located throughout the terminal.
Airport FacilitiesMoney: There is a bank in Terminal 2 and several bureaux de change counters and ATMs throughout both terminals.
Communications: A post office is located in the departures hall of Terminal 1. Free wireless internet is available throughout the terminals. Additional internet access is provided by The Cyber Break Café in the northwest concourse of Terminal 1, while Power Phones for Internet access are also positioned at various points in the terminals and Ground Transportation Centre.
Food: There are more than 150 options for food and drink at Hong Kong International Airport, including fast-food outlets, full-service restaurants and cafés.
Shopping: Shops, including gift retailers, designer boutiques and duty-free outlets, are available in both terminals. There is a 24-hour convenience store in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1. A pre-order and pick-up service for duty-free products is available.
Luggage: Trolleys are available at all passenger drop-off points. A porter service operated by Worldwide Flight Services (tel: 2261 2727) is available at various points, including the baggage reclaim hall and the departures areas.An excess baggage shipping service (tel: 2769 8681) is available at aisle K, before check-in in Terminal 1. A left-luggage facility (tel: 2261 0110) is situated in the Arrivals hall in Terminal 1.Lost and found services can be found at the customer service centres on level 5 of Terminal 2, as well as at the airport police report centre and via the help phones.
Other facilities: There is a medical centre (tel: 2261 2626) on level 7 of Terminal 1. The Plaza Shower and Relaxation Lounge on the same level is open 24 hours a day and provides shower rooms, semi-private relaxation rooms and a mini salon. Among the other facilities is a massage centre and a 24-hour non-denominational prayer room in the Terminal 1 check-in hall.Children's play areas are located near gates 22 and 36, while nursery rooms are located at various points throughout the terminal.For pre-flight entertainment, there is an IMAX 3D cinema on level 6 of Terminal 1 and various exhibitions throughout the concourses.
Conference and business facilitiesA business centre is located in the Terminal 1 check-in hall. Services here include fax facilities and mobile telephone hire. Further conference and business facilities are available from the Plaza Premium Lounge (tel: 3559 1108; between the two terminals, and the on-site Regal Airport Hotel (tel: 2286 8888; In addition, there are several airline lounges as well as a number of airside multimedia lounges for departing passengers.Full conference facilities are available at the World Trade Centre (tel: 3153 2338;, which is adjacent to the airport. Disabled facilitiesHong Kong International Airport is fully accessible for disabled travellers. There are plenty of wheelchair-accessible toilets, lifts, ramps and escalators around the airport and at the Ground Transportation Centre. The terminal shuttle train is also wheelchair-accessible. Escalators and walkways have audio warning signals, while lifts, toilets and telephones have Braille signs. Tactile path guides and induction loops are installed at various points.Wheelchairs are provided free of charge by airlines; passengers should inform the airline prior to travel.
