Flights to Hangzhou

Renowned as one of China’s most picturesque destinations, Hangzhou is a spellbinding city on the banks of the mighty Qiantang River.

One of the seven ancient capitals of China, Hangzhou is characterised by glistening lakes and lush green hillsides. Its enchanting natural beauty is embellished with intricately designed ancient sites and innovative modern architecture.

West Lake, a tranquil expanse of water fringed with drooping willow trees and peppered with beautiful old structures, is Hangzhou’s crowning jewel. Hire a sampan boat, effortlessly paddled by locals to the tune of a single oar, to discover ornate bridges, pagodas and several diminutive islands. Spot distinctive temple roofs peering over the treetops in front of cloud‑capped hills as you glide past idyllic gardens and parks. Xixi Wetlands Park, a myriad of rivers and canals west of Hangzhou, offers further serenity. Visit in spring when its blossom trees are in full bloom for a particularly magical excursion.

Situated between the wetlands and West Lake, Lingyin Temple is among Hangzhou’s premier showpieces. One of the oldest and most significant temples in China, the site intertwines with thick forest that spills down the sides of Feilai Peak. Explore its astonishing Great Hall, complete with a staggering 20‑metre statue, and grottoes dotted with hundreds of meticulous wall carvings.

South of Hangzhou, the Six Harmonies Pagoda is a hilltop, pavilion‑style tower infused with local history and mythology. Stroll through charming gardens to this fascinating octagonal structure, built over 1,000 years ago, and climb its tight stairs to enjoy panoramic views over the Qiantang River.

The ultra‑modern centre of Hangzhou provides more unforgettable experiences. Marvel at breathtaking architectural feats like the Yohoo Museum, an infinity loop‑shaped structure on an artificial island, and the geometric window patterns of the iceberg‑inspired Yuhang Opera House.

The city centre still retains a flavour of ancient China, however, with Hefang Street a brilliantly preserved, bustling strip of folk culture. Here you’ll find teahouses, silk shops – echoes of the thriving Hangzhou silk era – and an array of immaculate local crafts.

As well as providing a peaceful escape from the city, West Lake also forms the backbone of Hangzhou cuisine. West Lake fish is a local speciality, comprising of a whole fish poached and glazed with a sweet vinegar sauce for a striking flavour. West Lake water shield soup is a unique, colourful alternative, blending green water shield and shredded chicken for a nutritious dish.
