Travel to Japan

Travel eligibility

Passengers who have been to the UK and South Africa within the past 2 weeks are denied entry to Japan.

Following exceptions apply:

  • Japanese nationals and special permanent residence status holders
  • Foreign nationals with re-entry permit
  • Above passengers must hold COVID-19 negative PCR certificate tested within 72 hours of departure.
  • Above passengers will be subjected to mandatory 3 day quarantine at quarantine accommodation arranged by local authorities. On the 3rd day, COVID-19 test will be carried out and only those who are negative will be released.
  • In case Japanese nationals do not hold negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate, they still can be accepted to travel. However, they are required to stay at the quarantine arranged accommodation for 6 days on Japanese Government expense.  On the 3rd day and 6th day, COVID-19 test will be carried out and only those who are negative on both tests will be released.

All passengers from entry banned countries will be denied entry in to Japan. Please refer to the updated list of restricted countries on the Japan Foreign Affairs website.

Entry exceptions:

  • Japanese nationals and special permanent resident status holders.
  • Foreign nationals who have re-entry permit: A negative COVID-19 PCR certificate tested within 72 hours of departure is mandatory.
  • Foreign nationals with exceptional circumstances (Refer Japan Immigration Link:http://www.moj.go.jp/isa/content/001337716.pdf).  Proof documents are required.

COVID-19 PCR certificate requirements

  • For arrival on and before 12 JAN 21, All Japanese nationals and special permanent resident holders who in the last 14 days have been to countries and regions where Japanese Authorities have have announced the confirmation of domestic infection of the new variant of Coronavirus within their countries and regions must have a COVID-19 negative certificate tested within 72 hours before departure. Visit Japan Foreign Affairs website to view the list of applicable countries and regions.
  • All foreign passengers must have COVID-19 negative certificate tested within 72 hours before departure.
  • For arrival on and after 13 JAN 21, all passengers including Japanese arriving Japan regardless where they have been to in the last 14 days must hold COVID-19 negative certificate tested within 72 hours of departure.
  • In case Japanese nationals do not hold negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate, they still can be accepted to travel. However, they are required to stay at the quarantine arranged accommodation for 3 days on Japanese Government expense.  On the 3rd day, COVID-19 test will be carried out and only those who are negative will be released.

The negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate presented to Japanese immigration officers must include the type of test, time/date when sample is collected, result and result date. It is highly recommended to use the approved format for smooth entry. The certificate must be original and copied certificate will not be accepted.

The test must be by RT-PCR nucleic acid amplification test, LAMP nucleic acid amplification test or Antigen test (CLEIA) using Nasopharyngeal Swab or Saliva.

There is no exception for children and infants for the negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate requirement.

Exemptions

  • Diplomat or Official resident status holder will be allowed on flights without a negative COVID-19 certificate.
  • Air crew (no COVID-19 PCR negative certificate required)
  • US military members with US passport, Order form (duty/vacation), or Military ID
  • For arrival on and before 12JAN, Customers who have never been to countries/regions designated as an area subject to denial of permission to enter Japan in the last 14 days do not require COVID-19 PCR test certificate. Please refer to the updated list of restricted countries on the Japan Foreign Affairs website.

Quarantine

All arriving passengers to Japan regardless where they have been are required 14 days self-quarantine after arrival Japan and are prohibited to take any public transport including trains/buses/taxies and airplanes.

Passengers returning to/entering Japan are recommended to complete the online quarantine questionnaire prior arrival using link here (Internet access is required) and the QR code issued on website must be presented to a quarantine officer at the arrival airport. If an internet connection is not accessible, then a printed version is acceptable by immigration.
