Travel to Ethiopia

If you are travelling to Ethiopia, you are required to take a COVID-19 PCR test before departure and undergo self-quarantine on arrival.

COVID-19 testing requirements

All passengers travelling to Ethiopia must present a printed copy of a negative COVID-19 PCR test result certificate for a test conducted not more than 5 days before arrival. The certificate must clearly mention that an RT PCR test was conducted, the time and date when the sample was taken and have an official stamp of the authorities issuing the certificate. Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT antibody test) results will not be accepted. Children under 12 years are exempted as long as they are travelling with their parents and their parents have a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate.


All passengers, except those connecting through Ethiopia, will be required to undergo self-quarantine at home for 7 days.

Arriving diplomats must undergo a 14-day quarantine at their respective embassies.


While it is advised, diplomatic passport holders, including United Nations and African Union personnel and their immediate families, may travel from Dubai to Ethiopia without a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test certificate.

Travel from Ethiopia

COVID-19 testing requirements

If you are travelling from Ethiopia, you may be required to take a COVID-19 PCR test and submit additional documentation before departure. Please check the requirements of your specific destination before travel. Emirates passengers can book their PCR tests for a special rate here at an Emirates Airlines Priority Centre- Near Tikur Anbesa. COVID-19 PCR test results will be delivered within 24 to 48 hours and can be collected from any ICL branch.

All essential information must be entered as stated in your passport before you can get a booking confirmation. Please be informed that a confirmed flight ticket is required to hold an appointment, as all appointments without confirmed flight tickets will be cancelled within 24 hours.

Once you complete the online form, you need to:

  • Print the confirmation page from the appointment system and bring it to your appointment.
  • Make sure your passport, as well as copies of your valid passport and ticket are at hand.
  • Ethiopian origin with foreign passports and foreign nationals resident in Ethiopia must carry a copy of their Ethiopian Origin ID card or their Ethiopian Resident ID.
  • All Ethiopian citizens and foreign nationals with resident permits are required to deposit payment of 1,250 ETB via bank deposit. (A copy of the Ethiopian Origin ID or Ethiopian Residence ID needs to be provided as proof of citizenship/residence to be eligible to pay in ETB).
  • All foreign nationals without a resident permit are expected to pay $40 USD via online payment, bank deposit or credit cards using Visa, Mastercard or Union Card.
