Flights to Algiers

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Algeria’s capital is called Alger la Blanche (Algiers the White) in French, because of the white colour of its buildings. Seemingly frozen in time, the majority of high-rises and villas exhibit French-influenced, richly textured architecture that’s fascinating for any traveller who books flights to Algiers.

Whether it’s trawling through the ancient ruins of Casbah (now a Unesco World Heritage Site) or venturing outside of the downtown area into the more contemporary neighbourhoods, there’s something for everyone in this stunning city.

As the largest country in Africa – though vast parts of it are covered by the Sahara Desert and two national parks in the south – Algeria has many neighbours. Its big cities are influenced by those nearby, including Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali and Mauritania.

The people of Algiers are warm, friendly and enjoy their free time. In the evening, many residents can be seen out and about, socialising at a seafront cafe or dining in one of the many restaurants. Arabic is the official language, but French is widely spoken. This influences the city’s nightlife scene, with restaurants and cafes focusing heavily on French, Middle Eastern and North African food and drink.

Whether it’s stopping over for a weekend or spending the week there, it’s well worth crossing Algiers off your travel bucket list.

What to do in Algiers

Visit the Kasbah/Casbah of Algiers

Right in the heart of Algiers is the ancient Kasbah (or Casbah of Algiers), a charming neighbourhood that remains fiercely traditional. This Unesco World Heritage Site is home to magnificent Ottoman-styled 17th century palaces, including the mansion Dar Hassan Pacha, which played host to Napoleon Bonaparte. Next to it is the beautiful Ketchaoua Mosque, with the Djemaa El Djedid, El Kebir (Great Mosque of Algiers) and Ali Betchnin mosques also nearby.

Take a cable car to the Notre Dame d’Afrique

Standing on a 124m cliff that surveys the Bay of Algiers is the spectacular Notre Dame d’Afrique. Created by the famous architect Jean-Eugene Fromageau, the best way to get to this 18th century Catholic basilica is by cable car. This fascinating sand-coloured structure is home to a black stone statue of the Virgin Mary.

See the Grande Poste d’Alger

The famous Grande Poste d’Alger – Algiers’ main post office – has a rich history. Located in the city centre, this French-designed 20th century building wouldn’t look out of place in a classic black and white movie.

Where to eat in Algiers

Le Taj Mahal (Indian)

Algiers may not be one of the obvious places to go looking for Indian cuisine, but Le Taj Mahal is one of the city’s hottest restaurants. This vegan and vegetarian friendly spot serves up delicious tandoori dishes and kebabs, cooked – and spiced – to your liking.

Le Maison de Couscous (Middle Eastern)

Translating into the ‘House of Couscous’, this no-frills eatery serves up exactly what its name says: couscous, along with traditional Algerian soup and bourek (filled pastry). Popular with locals, this diner is tucked away two blocks from the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Alger. It’s all about a great atmosphere and full-flavoured fare.

La Palmeraie (Moroccan)

This Bedouin tent-style eatery lies out of town, but feels a whole lot different. There are carpets on the walls and ceiling, and diners sit on low couches around one huge table. Food is a traditional mix of hotpots and meats, after which partying with other guests is encouraged.
