The Ritz, Paris

In the world of architecture and design, there are big jobs and there are big jobs. Re-imagining the Ritz Paris, it’s accurate to say, is the latter.

Closed since 2012, the refurb is the biggest in its history. And what a history it is, too. The Ritz’s 159 rooms and suites have seen every head of state and high-profile celebrity you care to mention, Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway being the most famous long-term residents. Not all have been entirely welcome, of course: the Luftwaffe chose it as its base during the German occupation.

A global byword for luxury – the Imperial Suite has been listed by the French government as a national monument – the changes at the Ritz are set to be spectacular. Almost everything will be refreshed, while Chanel will open its very first spa here – Chanel au Ritz.

Whether you’re here for a drink in Bar Hemingway (rumour has it the Bloody Mary was created here), or the fine dining of the legendary L’ Espadon; as of June 1, history awaits.
