Flights to Hong Kong

When booking flights to Hong Kong, think of it as two distinct areas – Hong Kong Island, which lots of people compare with Manhattan, and Kowloon. Hong Kong Island is generally the more popular destination with tourists, so that’s where you’ll find the movers and shakers of the city’s dining and nightlife scene, as well as its most luxurious hotels.

Having said that, Kowloon is a cool, up-and-coming destination with lounges and restaurants, vibrant shopping areas and, best of all, cheaper luxury hotels. Whichever you decide to make your base, it’s quite easy to travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon across the iconic Hong Kong Harbour, either by hopping on the Star Ferry or via the underground metro system.

Hong Kong makes for a wonderfully family-friendly holiday too. Children of all ages will be thrilled by the panda pens at Ocean Park theme park (as will their parents), and everyone will enjoy trying to spot Hong Kong’s indigenous pink dolphins during a ferry ride to Lantau Island.

Wherever you go in Hong Kong, go with an appetite – this is a city that’s all about consumption, whether you’re talking about dining, culture or shopping. There are over 11,000 restaurants in the city – from Michelin-starred destinations and celebrity chef-helmed spots to street food cafes. When it comes to retail therapy, Causeway Bay and Temple Street Night Market will entice you to spend your Hong Kong dollars.

Of course, it’s not just skyscrapers and shopping malls – boat trips across the harbour, island hopping, and hiking up Victoria Peak will remind you that Hong Kong’s natural beauty more than matches its man-made charms.

What to do in Hong Kong

Go dolphin watching

Hong Kong’s pink dolphins are a fascinating but endangered species, and if you get a chance to see them grab it. Go with Hong Kong Dolphinwatch, the only tour operator recognised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. They run three-hour boat tours three days a week.

Shop at Temple Street Night Market

To say shopping is popular in Hong Kong is a bit of an understatement. The most famous shopping area is Causeway Bay, which has everything from malls to boutiques. There’s also Temple Street Night Market, where you can haggle for pretty much anything.

See the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees

Gaze up at the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees and you’ll see hundreds of pieces of josh paper on the branches – thrown by festive-goers making wishes. It is an old tradition that continues to this day. You can also visit the nearby Tin Hau Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, which was built in the 18th century.

Where to eat in Hong Kong

Tim Ho Wan (Cantonese)

This brilliant dim sum joint is famous for being the cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant in the world. Its popularity means there are now franchise branches all over Hong Kong and overseas, so make sure it’s the original hole-in-the-wall in Sham Shui Po that you visit. Don’t leave without sampling the legendary BBQ buns.

Otto e Mezzo Bombana (Italian)

This elegant spot is the only Italian restaurant outside of Italy to receive three Michelin stars. Helmed by the talented Chef Bombana, the kitchen serves some of the best seafood in Hong Kong. The staff know their stuff, and will be happy to advise you on the menu.

Jumbo Kingdom Floating Restaurant (International)

Sometimes you want to avoid the usual tourist spots, and other times you just have to follow the crowds to the most awe-inspiring places. That’s the case with Jumbo Kingdom, a massive floating restaurant on Shing Mun River that looks like an imperial palace. It's hugely popular and seats more than 2,000 diners.

Places to stay in Hong Kong

Inn Spirit

Although not widely known as a backpacker destination, there are cheap places to stay in Hong Kong if you know where to look. The rooms at Inn Spirit are cosy, clean and comfortable, and the prices are very reasonable. It’s close to the busy Nathan Road and just a short walk from the MTR, Hong Kong’s subway system.
