Restraint Harnesses / Devices for Infants, Children and Adults

A restraint harness or device can be fitted to the seats to secure a passenger during the flight.

We accept the following restraint harnesses/devices for travel:

  • Amsafe CARES and Special CARES
  • Crellling/Houdini Model 27
  • Meru TravelChair
  • Leckey Firefly GoTo Seat

All our approved devices have undergone a rigorous risk assessment to ensure they are compatible with our aircraft seats and can be safely secured with the seatbelt.

Please refer to the FAQ for more information on which cabin classes can accommodate these devices.

We do not provide these harnesses and devices on board. You must contact your nearest Emirates Contact Centre at least 48 hours before travel as these devices can only be used on approved seat locations and in certain cabins.

When to use a restraint harness

Passengers must be able to sit upright in the aircraft seat. If this isn’t possible, they must have an aviation-approved harness or restraint and travel with assistant who meets the following criteria:

  • Must be 16 years of age and above.
  • Must be physically and mentally able and can take care of the needs of the passenger including assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation.
  • Must be seated on an adjacent seat to the passenger.

If you are travelling alone and you are unable to sit upright and do not have a harness, we can arrange to accommodate a stretcher. Please contact us 48 hours before your flight.

Travelling with an assistant

If you’re travelling with a harness, you will need to fly with an assistant and complete the MEDIF form. Find out more about travelling with an assistant here.

For information on why and when a MEDIF is required, visit our MEDIF page.

Limitations:

  • A responsible adult must be seated next to the passenger using the restraint harness/device.
  • The adult or assistant is responsible for fitting the restraint harness/device and for ensuring that the occupant is seated and secured correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The passenger’s seat lap belt must be fastened securely while the restraint harness/device is also in use.
  • We will only accept restraint harnesses/devices at the airport if all conditions have been met and we confirm that it is one of the accepted harnesses/devices from the above approved list.
  • When other airlines or code share airlines are involved in an itinerary, the regulations of the carrying airline are applicable. Please check with the carrier about their policies regarding restraint harnesses/devices before your flight.
  • We only accept CARES and Special CARES made by Amsafe on Emirates flights.
  • If the user exceeds the height or weight limitations of the CARES harness and you have connecting flights with a US airline, you will need to request an exemption from the FAA to use the CARES harness before your travel to/from the US.
  • Being a foreign carrier, FAA certification is not applicable for use on Emirates flights. FAA regulations regarding child harness restraints do not directly apply to Emirates or our passengers. However, these limitations are covered in our GCAA approved internal risk assessment.
