Flights to Munich

After Berlin and Hamburg, Munich is Germany’s largest city. And while its most famous export may be Oktoberfest – an annual celebration of German culture and cuisine when flights to Munich fill up fast – there’s more to the Bavarian capital than this raucous festival. Culturally speaking, there are enough attractions to rival even Berlin. Plus, despite its size, it has the feel of a small town that's easy to explore on foot.

While Munich’s art galleries may not be as famous as those of, say, Paris or New York, some of the collections are truly astonishing. The Alte Pinakothek, for example, boasts one of the best and oldest collections of European art, dating all the way back to the Middle Ages.

Arguably the biggest historical attraction in Munich is Königsplatz (German for King’s Square). This ancient temple was an important site during the Second World War, and today visitors get a real sense of history as they wander around its columns.

The beautiful Frauenkirche is another highlight – a 15th century cathedral that can hold up to 10,000 people. You should also visit Peterskirche – it’s the oldest church in the city centre.

Perhaps the most famous example of Munich architecture is Castle Nymphenburg. You’ll need to take a day trip out of the city to get there, but it’s well worth it to see this incredible castle nestled in the Bavarian Alps that looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Surf on Eisbach River

When you picture surfing capitals of the world, Munich probably doesn’t spring to mind. However, the Bavarian city is the birthplace of the unusual sport of river surfing. Head to Eisbach, a small manmade river in the English Garden, to see the wetsuit-clad adrenaline junkies do their thing.

Soak up some park life

New York has Central Park, London has Hyde Park – Munich has the Englischer Garten (English Garden). When the sun comes out, the entire city seems to converge on this green spot for walking, jogging or soaking up some rays.

Taverna Naxos (Greek)

This popular Greek restaurant in Munich has everything you could want: tasty, authentic cuisine, friendly staff and a warm, festive atmosphere. The portions are generous – think big plates of roasted vegetables, baked feta cheese and crisp salads – but the prices won’t make much of a dent in your budget.

Underground Art, Munich

Thanks to an ambitious public art project, The Munich U-Bahn is about much more than getting from A to B. In the mid 1980s, the Munich government made the decision to begin using public spaces for artistic expression. Rolf Schirmer, from the subway planning council, felt that the stations should “radiate a positive mood” and that “the use of artistic elements should help make a passenger’s wait more pleasant, something that cannot generally be said of subterranean spaces” Read more Underground Art, Munich
