Flights to Shanghai

Shanghai’s dynamism and progress is amazing when you consider that, up until 1842, the city was little more than a fishing village. Today, flights to Shanghai arrive at a diverse and multicultural destination, home to some of the most exciting restaurants, nightlife venues and hotels that China has to offer.

Shanghai is also the tallest city in mainland China (the 632m Shanghai Tower is the second tallest in the world), as well as its most populated. And, with the Shanghai Stock Exchange being one of the most influential in the world, this is China’s financial centre too.

If you’re looking for tranquillity in this city of 24 million, it pays to be an early riser. With a lot of popular sites, it’s best to get there early in the morning, when the crowds are lighter and the light makes for great photos. Set your alarm to check out the Yuyuan Gardens and the Jade Buddha Temple.

Shanghai’s architecture is an interesting mix of old and new – among all the space-age skyscrapers there are many examples of colonial architecture from the city’s boom time in the early 1900s. Travel to Shanghai’s fringes, to ancient water towns such as Zhujiajiao for example, and you’ll see historical architecture that dates back even further.

Shanghai’s neighbourhoods are as diverse as the architecture, and each one has something different to offer. For the liveliest nightlife, visitors and locals flock to neon-lit Lujiazui. But if what you're really interested in doing is spending your holiday budget, then shopaholic’s heaven Tianzifang is the place to go.

It’s hard to know where to start in a city that has so much, but that’s half the fun – whether you’re strolling down The Bund along the waterfront, bargaining for souvenirs in Dongtai Lu Antique Market or cycling through the French Concession, there’s always something to do in Shanghai.

What to do in Shanghai

Visit Shanghai Museum

This is one of the best museums in China, with a large collection of ancient bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, Qing dynasty artefacts and more. You might not be able to cover everything, but what you do see offers a great insight into the nation’s ancient civilisation.

Travel on the Maglev

Stroll along The Bund

Located on the west bank of the Huangpu River, nothing beats a walk along The Bund for taking in the views of Shanghai’s cool architecture. On the Huangpu Park side, you can see the famous Customs House and Astor House Hotel, and across the water from that is the iconic Pearl Tower.

Where to eat in Shanghai

Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet (Contemporary)

Dinner at Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet is a complex experience – in a good way. There are eight courses prepared by 25 chefs, and you eat in sync with audio-visual displays to make it a more multisensory experience. Luckily, the food is delicious enough to be worth the fuss. The location is secret, so you have to book ahead.

The Commune Social (Spanish)

This is the best place for tapas in Shanghai, and is the brainchild of celebrity chef Jason Atherton. Think smoked bone marrow, onion jam and sour dough bread; miso-grilled mackerel, wasabi avocado and cucumber chutney; and DIY tuna tartare. It has a relaxed atmosphere as well, with no reservations and no service charge.

Mercato by Jean-Georges (Italian)

When nothing but a hearty bowl of pasta will do, head for Mercato. Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten serves the best pasta in Shanghai, as well as pizza and fantastic seafood, in this lovely, rustic setting. It’s one of the best restaurants on The Bund.

Places to stay in Shanghai

Yangtze Boutique Hotel Shanghai

Originally built in 1934, the iconic Art Deco Yangtze Hotel was the centre of the Shanghai jazz scene. Today, the Yangtze Boutique Hotel (as it’s now known) is a characterful homage to the past, as well as a great example of Shanghai’s modern hospitality values.

The Waterhouse at South Bund

If you want a boutique hotel in Shanghai, this industrial chic spot in Huangpu is a good choice. Housed in a former army compound on the Huangpu River, it’s seriously stylish, with floor-to-ceiling windows, rustic wood panelling and chandeliers in the lobby. The restaurant, Table No.1, has a cool international vibe.
