Hotel Belmond Caruso, Ravello

26 September 2016

Words: Andrew Nagy / Images: Belmond Group

Just occasionally, there are moments in life when you sit down, inhale, and feel something approaching an easy contentment. A place by the pool, overlooking the Amalfi Coast at the Hotel Belmond Caruso, is undoubtedly one of them.

Perched at the top of a small cobbled street in Ravello, the building was formerly an 11th century palazzo and has retained its Neapolitan good looks, with colourful frescos and beautiful mosaic tile floors. You’re a five-minute walk into the centre of town, and an early evening stroll is a must, but you’ll find that it’s often difficult prising yourself away from the hotel. Belvedere Restaurant, in particular, is a fantastic example of simple traditional Italian dishes done exceedingly well.

When the outdoors does finally call, you can make the most of it with a complimentary boat trip along the coast, or a bus ride to Positano. But make no mistake about it, long after your trip has ended, it’s the view from your room, of the Amalfi coast melting into the Med, that you’ll be talking about.
