Flights to Taipei

Taipei, which is concentrated in the north of Taiwan, is made up of 12 districts, each with its own identity. Wanhua is one of the oldest, but also one of the trendiest. Neihu is where you'll find old and new Taipei, with temples and shopping malls standing side by side. Shilin is home to the National Palace Museum, which has nearly 700,000 pieces of imperial artefacts.

Taipei is one of those cities that never seem to sleep. Night markets fill the streets with the sights and smells of dumplings, beef noodle soup and shaved ice desserts.

Not only can you find a convenience store open at any hour and on every street corner (Taipei has one of the highest per capita concentrations of convenience stores on earth), but also 24-hour karaoke bars – and even a 24-hour bookstore. It’s also known for having some of Asia's best coffee shops and a thriving music scene. But Taipei doesn't take itself too seriously – for proof, visit one of its themed restaurants (Barbie-themed, prison-themed and even toilet-themed are all on offer).

Sitting in a basin between the Yangming Mountains and the Central Mountains, Taipei is also blessed with gorgeous scenery. Head to the Beitou district for its hot springs and the stunning Yangmingshan National Park, or to Elephant Mountain hiking trail in Nangang and its rolling forest hills overlooking the city.

You can see the city in all its glory from the top of Taipei 101 – a 101-storey skyscraper. And once you realise it’s all connected by an efficient public transport system, it comes as no surprise that Taiwan's capital is one of the world's most popular cities for visitors.

What to do in Taipei

Visit Yangmingshan National Park

Just a bus ride away from the city centre, Yangmingshan is simply stunning. With its hot springs, cherry blossoms and dramatic landscape, which includes Taiwan's tallest dormant volcano, Seven Star Mountain, it’s a wonderful place to visit if you enjoying hiking and the great outdoors.

Visit the Miniatures Museum of Taiwan

The Miniatures Museum of Taiwan is weird, wonderful and completely captivating. It's home to incredibly intricate houses, castles and palaces – both Eastern and Western – and whole sprawling towns, as well as scenes from classic children's stories such as Alice in Wonderland. It’s worth visiting however old you are.

Shop at Shida Night Market

Shilin may be Taipei's most popular market, but Shida is the coolest. It all kicks off at 6pm and runs late into the night. It’s a great place to pick up clothes and jewellery, and an even better place to eat street food. Which stall does the best beef noodle soup? Let the sampling begin.

Where to eat in Taipei

Shin Yeh (Taiwanese)

The owners of Shin Yeh set up shop back in the 1970s as a tiny back alley joint, before it became one of Taipei’s best restaurants. It did this by focusing on Taiwanese comfort food and adding a contemporary twist. There are several Shin Yehs in the city, but this, the original, is the best.

Kanpai (Japanese)

Kanpai is a Japanese barbecue, where you can have food prepared and served in the usual way, or cook it yourself on the barbecue pit built into the table. It is one of the most fun and sociable places to eat in the city.

Din Tai Fung (Taiwanese)

There are several Din Tai Fungs in Taipei, and around Asia, the success of which is built on its spectacular steamed soup dumplings (xiao long bao). But everything on the menu at this Xinyi Road eatery is a five-star delicacy, as are desserts such as the steamed red bean dumplings.
