Emirates and South Africa

Since the commencement of services to Johannesburg in 1995, Emirates has carried over 15.9 million passengers and more than 703,400 tonnes of cargo on its South Africa flights.

In 2017/18 alone, Emirates carried over 1.7 million passengers and transported over 61,000 tonnes of high-value cargo to and from South Africa.

Emirates currently operates 49 passenger flights a week – four times daily to Johannesburg, two times daily to Cape Town and daily to Durban.

Emirates’ economic impact in South Africa

In 2016, Genesis Analytics, a respected economic research institution based in South Africa, published an economic impact study quantifying the economic contribution of the Emirates Group to South Africa.

The study, entitled “Quantifying the Socio-Economic Contribution of Emirates to South Africa”, analyses the contribution of Emirates to the economy in terms of the impact of Emirates’ core operations; the benefits to the economy created through connectivity with the rest of the world; and the benefits of codeshare and interline partnerships.

The analysis showed that the total combined direct, indirect, and induced economic value-add of the Group’s operations in 2014/15 amounted to US$417 million (ZAR 4.5 billion) in GDP. The combined direct, indirect, and induced impact of employment for the same period was 12,989 jobs.
