Transforming connectivity Down Under

Since the launch of our flights to Australia in 1996, we have carried more than 33.44 million passengers, providing a boost to the country’s A$28 billion annual income through tourism. In 2017, we carried more than 3.3 million passengers and 110,000 tonnes of high value cargo on our Australia flights.

Emirates is the largest foreign carrier operating to Australia, flying 84 times per week – daily to Adelaide, twice daily to Perth, and three times daily to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Emirates currently deploys a mix of Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft on its Australia services. Emirates has progressively up-gauged direct services to Australia from B777s to A380s and currently operates a daily A380 service to Brisbane and Perth, twice daily A380 services to  Melbourne and three daily A380 services to Sydney. The up-gauges equate to an increase in capacity of 38% on those services, reinforcing Emirates’ commitment to business and leisure passengers visiting Australia.

Our global partnership with Qantas is an important part of our relationship with Australia. The agreement has opened up greater access to Australia via the extensive Qantas domestic network, and connects Australia more seamlessly with the rest of the world via our Dubai hub.

Our economic impact in Australia

Economic benefits of Emirates flights

A 2011 study by Oxford Economics found that our one-stop connectivity to/from the MENA region and Europe via Dubai generated an additional A$248 million for the Australian economy and over A$840 million in consumer benefits. The study also revealed that in 2009, our passenger traffic generated A$1.33 billion in GDP for the Australian tourism sector.

A 2015 study from Deloitte Access Economics shows that one Emirates’ Dubai-Sydney A380 service makes an annual contribution of A$324 million (USD$233 million) to Australia’s GDP, supporting 3,770 jobs.

Extending our reach at the community level

A major investor in Australia

Employing over 7,400 Australians globally, Emirates Airline & Group has a national footprint of aviation and tourism businesses beyond the five Australian cities it currently serves.

Since 1996, we have invested over A$97 million in arts, community and sports sponsorships. In Australia, Emirates is a sponsor of many community groups and events, bringing together people of shared passions from all around the world. Some of the main events that highlight the strong ties between Emirates and Australia include the Australian Open Tennis, Australian Grand Prix, Australian PGA Championship, Collingwood Football Club, the Principal Partner of the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, major partner of the Adelaide Festival and a major partner of Perth International Golf (European Tour association).

In addition, Emirates has invested over A$125 million in developing Emirates One &Only Wolgan Valley – Australia’s first luxury conservation resort.

Encouraging further trade success

Australia – UAE: bilateral ties

The economic partnership between Australia and the UAE has transformed dramatically since the launch of Emirates flights in 1996. Today, the UAE is Australia’s largest trade partner in the MENA region with bilateral trade reaching A$7.9 billion in 2016/17.

Australian exports to the UAE have had an average annual growth rate of 8% since 1996 and grew to over A$3 billion in 2017.

An iconic partnership

Emirates and Qantas

Launched on 31 March 2013, our global aviation partnership with Qantas provides customers with a seamless international and Australian network and exclusive frequent flyer benefits. The Emirates-Qantas partnership has also significantly increased competition in the Australian airline market, to the benefit of consumers.

The long-term commercial partnership goes beyond code sharing and includes integrated network collaboration with coordinated pricing, sales and scheduling as well as a benefits sharing model.

Frequent flyers with both airlines can earn and redeem points/miles on both Emirates and Qantas flights, take advantage of the expanded network and have their tier status recognised with both airlines.

For Emirates customers, the partnership has opened up Qantas’ Australian domestic network of more than 60 destinations and 5,000 flights per week.
