Krabi is an esteemed Thai province with alluring white-sand beaches and picturesque bays.

The town of Ao Nang is Krabi’s touristic hotbed. Adorned with world-famous beaches, it’s a lively launchpad for exploring the wonders of Phang Nga Bay. But first, a relaxing morning or afternoon on Railay Beach is a must. A long-tail boat trip from Ao Nang Beach – a glorious retreat in its own right – is the only way to reach this sensational spot. Paddle in shallow, turquoise waters and admire the iconic limestone stacks that flank the beach along with a dense blanket of trees. 

Looking out over the bay, you’ll spot a multitude of islands on the horizon. Unforgettable boat excursions to these tropical escapes are a significant part of Krabi’s appeal. Visit the internationally known Phi Phi Islands, a spellbinding archipelago lined with pristine beaches. The largest and most populated island, Ko Phi Phi Don, throngs with activity long into the night. Meanwhile, the serene Ko Phi Phi Le is home to Maya Bay, an exquisite location made famous by the 2000 movie The Beach. 

To the south of Krabi province, Ko Lanta is another mesmerising island adorned with charming palm-lined beaches. Hike through the Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the southwestern tip of the island to discover its most prized natural landscapes and more secluded areas. Ko Lanta is also known for its spectacular dive sites – explore thriving coral reefs and spot whale sharks and manta rays. 

Near Krabi town, the provincial capital, Tiger Cave Temple is a magnificent religious site famed for the arduous yet rewarding climb required to reach it. Ascend 1,237 steps to find its colossal golden statues, labyrinth of caves and legendary tiger paw prints embedded in stone. 

Given Krabi’s coastal location, there are plenty of appealing fish dishes to sample during a trip to the province. Pla pao is a Thai-style grilled fish with a distinctive salty, smoky flavour while tom yum goong is a flavoursome hot and sour prawn soup. Pad Thai, one of the nation’s favourite dishes, is often served with melt-in-the-mouth tiger prawns too.

  • Kayak through the mangroves
    Krabi is scattered with thick mangrove forests, and you can explore these pristine natural environments on an unforgettable kayak tour. Experience a different side of the province, away from the sandy beaches and buzzing marketplaces. Spot colourful birds, monkeys and monitor lizards as you paddle through jungle canyons and steep limestone cliffs.
  • Take a dip in the Emerald Pool
    Deep in the lush tropical rainforests of Thung Teao Forest Natural Park, an hour and a half from Krabi, the Emerald Pool is a pristine natural lagoon with an astonishing turquoise glow. Trek along a magical jungle path to find this stunning natural wonder and bathe in its mineral-rich waters.
  • Watch a fire show
    Spectacular fire dancing shows take place across much of Thailand, and Krabi offers some of the country’s best. When the sun is setting, head to Ao Nang Beach and look out for mesmerising spinning wheels of fire illuminating the inky sky. Watch daring performers stir up the crowd in exhilarating performances choregraphed to music.

Flying to Krabi

  • Krabi isn’t an island, it’s a province and town in southern Thailand. The province is predominantly situated on the mainland, with its capital, the southern town of Krabi, overlooking the Andaman Sea.

    The province does include several famous islands, including the Phi Phi Islands, Hong Island and Ko Lanta. Ferries are commonly used to reach Krabi, with the journey across the bay from Rassada Pier on the popular island of Phuket taking around one hour on the faster services.

  • The best time to visit Krabi is typically between November and March, which is its dry season. There is generally the least rainfall during this period and temperatures average around 27°C.

    It's usually less busy during the shoulder season between April and August, though rainfall becomes more and more frequent, culminating in the rainy season across September and October.

  • Ko Khao Phing Kan, also known as James Bond Island thanks to its appearance in the movie The Man with the Golden Gun, is 60 miles from Krabi town. It’s an hour and half drive from Krabi to Phang Nga, and then a 15-minute boat ride.

    Most tours from Krabi take all day and include the drive to Phang Nga and short boat ride out to James Bond Island. You’ll see several famous filming locations, as well as other incredible attractions like Khao Phing Kan, a leaning rock with tiny caves, and the floating village of Koh Panyi.
