About Adelaide

Adelaide is known locally as the ‘20 minute city’ and is one of the only cities in Australia where you can be swimming in the ocean, meandering through the vineyards or enjoying internationally acclaimed food, all within a short drive.

In Australia, Adelaide is unusual in that it was settled entirely by free settlers. Those who came to Adelaide chose stone to create a dignified city that stood for both civility and calm.

Today, Adelaide remains a city dedicated to refined taste, extending from its elegant buildings and boulevards to its restaurants and galleries.

Adelaide has a compact cultural core, surrounded by rolling hills and world-class beaches. Suburban parks and private gardens are dotted throughout the city, making Adelaide one of the most beautiful and serene cities of Australia.

Yet it is also a city with a soul. As, arguably, Australia’s cultural capital – it is home to the biennial Adelaide Festival, WOMAdelaide, Adelaide Fringe, Feast Festival, Adelaide Festival of Ideas and Adelaide fashion Festival. It is with good reason that South Australia is widely known as ‘The Festival State’.
