Abuja is in the centre of the country. It’s a planned city built mostly during the 1980s, replacing Lagos as Nigeria’s capital in 1991. It is the seat of the Federal Government and home to most of Nigeria’s institutions, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Abuja is also the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States and the regional headquarters of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Among some beautiful architectural sites, you can explore the city's Three Arms Zone and see the presidential villa, Supreme Court and the Federal House of Assembly. In the same zone, it’s also worth taking a look at Nigeria's national Mosque and Ecumenical Church.
If you want to support the locals, you can take a stroll through the city's Women's Development Center, located on Better Life Street. It’s a great place to see art highlighting important Nigerian women and to purchase crafts and books from local women.
