Al Fahidi Historical District

Al Fahidi Historical District

One of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai and the last wind tower quarter left on the Arab side of the Gulf

Al Fahidi Historical District

Area: Bur Dubai, Dubai

Al Fahidi Historical District is one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai and the last wind tower quarter left on the Arab side of the Gulf.

Sophisticated houses with rough walls shielding the privacy of the wealthy families within became a trademark of the Al Fahidi Historical District area. Wind towers topped these walls, trapping the wind and funnelling it down into the house as an effective form of early air conditioning. Inner courtyards, shady and highly decorated, provided a sharp contrast to this outer impenetrability. Wandering around Al Fahidi Historical District, it’s easy to transport yourself back to a bygone era. These old buildings have been converted into shady cafés, art galleries and quirky little shops – making Al Fahidi Historical District the perfect place to while away a few hours.

Dubai Museum

Try Basta Art Café for a refreshing drink, Majlis Gallery and XVA for art, and don’t miss the Dubai Museum.

Dubai Museum is the latest incarnation of the Al-Fahidi Fort. Built in 1787, it’s probably the oldest building in Dubai and has served time as palace, garrison and prison. Nowadays, its displays show everything from archaeological finds and traditional Dubaian life to the aerial photos of Dubai's growth from the 1950s and a slick multimedia presentation charting the city's progress through the decades.
