Weight and Piece Concepts

In line with international regulations, Emirates offers free baggage allowances based on either the weight or the piece concept, depending on specific routes.

Weight concept:

The standard free baggage allowance for all other Emirates destinations (excluding North, Central, and South America), as per the weight concept, is 50 kg for First Class, 40 kg for Business Class, and 30 kg for Economy Class.

For tickets issued on or after November 15, 2014
Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300 cm (118 in.) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule.

For tickets issued prior to November 15, 2014
Items beyond 300 cm (118 in.) and up to 400 cm (157 in.) in length may be accepted in exceptional cases. Please contact your local Emirates office for details at least 7 working days prior to traveling with such items. Items exceeding this limit must be referred to Emirates SkyCargo. If the free baggage allowance is exceeded, normal excess charges apply.

Piece concept:

The standard free baggage allowance for flights operating to or from North, Central, and South America is determined for each single piece of luggage.

For tickets issued on or after November 15, 2014
Total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 in.). Customers with individual items exceeding these dimensions and up to 300 cm (118 in.) will be charged an additional fee. Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300 cm (118 in.) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.

For customers with two pieces of luggagein all three classes, total combined dimensions of both pieces may not exceed 300 cm (118 in.).

For tickets issued prior to November 15, 2014
Total dimensions (length+ width+ height) of each piece must not exceed 158 cm (62 in.).
For Economy Class customers with two pieces of luggage, the total combined dimensions of both pieces must not exceed 273 cm (107 in.). Customers with baggage exceeding these dimensions will be charged an additional fee.

For travel on Emirates to or from North, Central, or South America, the piece concept applies on the entire ticketed journey. Excess baggage will be charged at the point of baggage acceptance through the tagged destination. If your trip involves a stopover, the excess baggage will be charged from the stopover point to the final destination at piece concept rates. 

However, for travel on Emirates from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia to North, Central, or South America that includes a sector in Europe or Africa, the weight concept will apply for the entire ticketed journey.

The maximum number of additional pieces (10 per customer) applies on all piece concept routes. 

Baggage policy for Africa

For tickets issued on or after April 15, 2016
For itineraries beginning from any destination in Africa, the piece concept applies. Customers beginning their journey in Africa are allowed two bags of up to 23 kg each in Economy Class, and two bags of up to 32 kg each in First Class or Business Class. This will apply regardless of the country in which the ticket was purchased. If the free baggage allowance is exceeded, excess charges apply.

For tickets issued before April 15, 2016
The baggage allowance for passengers with tickets issued before this date on journeys originating in Africa will continue to be based on the weight concept. This applies regardless of the date of travel. If the free baggage allowance is exceeded, excess charges apply.

Free baggage allowance for infants:

Customers with infants are allowed an additional bag up to 10 kg (22 lbs) that may not exceed 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 in.) in size where the weight concept applies, or one piece of up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 115 cm (45 in.) where the piece concept applies.
