Airport newsA new £20 million control tower was opened in mid-2013. Construction of the Airport City project, which will include additional business, retail, and leisure facilities and new hotels upon completion in 2016, is under way. Major terminal improvements and the construction of a new tram connection are at the planning stage.
Transfer between terminalsThe Skylink moving walkway system links Terminals 1, 2, and 3 via the airport railway station.
Driving directionsFrom central Manchester, take the southbound A5103 (Princess Road) and merge onto the southbound M56 motorway. Manchester Airport is located off junction 5 of the M56 motorway. Directions for all terminals are clearly signed.
Car rentalCar rental companies Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National, and Sixt are represented at the Car Rental Village, which is linked to the terminals by a free shuttle bus.
Public transport and taxisBus: The 24-hour Skyline bus 43 operates to the city center (travel time: 60 minutes; fare: £2.90). Coach: A number of National Express (tel: 0870 580 8080; services run from The Station to long-distance destinations throughout the United Kingdom. A dedicated ticket desk at The Station can provide full details of all routes and rates.
Taxi: Metered taxis are available either directly outside or near the arrivals hall of each terminal. A list of maximum fares for journeys outside Manchester is displayed near the taxi ranks. Alternatively, the airport’s official taxi partner, Arrow Cars (tel: 0161 489 8899), serves the airport with booking desks in each terminal. The travel time into central Manchester is 25 to 45 minutes, and fares start at about £20 for city center destinations.
Rail: Manchester Airport's rail, coach, and bus interchange, known as The Station, is connected to all three terminals via the Skylink moving walkway system. Trains operate to Manchester Airport from many stations in northern England and the Midlands. There is a frequent service between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly Station in the city center (travel time: 20 minutes; fare: £4), which has connections to most major destinations. Car parkingThere are 14,000 parking spaces at Manchester Airport. Short-stay multistory parking garages are located close to Terminals 1, 2, and 3; discounted rates are offered for prebooking online. A regular courtesy shuttle bus operates from the nearby long-term and economy Jet Parks areas to all terminals. Valet parking is available on request. Information and help desksThere are information desks in all terminals. Several staff members are trained in British Sign Language.
Airport FacilitiesMoney: ATMs, full-service banking facilities, and bureaux de change are available in each terminal. Currency can be pre-ordered from Travelex through the airport’s website and picked up on arrival at the airport.
Communications: Free Wi-Fi Internet access (up to 60 minutes) is provided in the terminal buildings; Internet booths are available for those without wireless-enabled devices. Public telephones are positioned throughout Manchester Airport. A post office is located on site.
Food: All terminals have a good choice of restaurants, cafés, and bars, some of which are open 24 hours a day. The majority of places to eat and drink are in the departures areas, but there are some options in the arrivals and check-in halls. The new Food Quarter food court in the departures area of Terminal 1 features a range of pop-up street-food–style eateries.
Shopping: Duty-free shops (for non-EU passengers) and a variety of gift shops, newsstands, and fashion boutiques are available in all terminals. For those not wishing to take their purchases with them on the flight, a "collect on return" service is available.
Luggage: Left-luggage facilities and lost property offices are operated by Excess Baggage Limited (tel: (0161) 489 3463 or 6031) in the Terminal 1 and 2 arrivals areas. Luggage trolleys can be hired for a £1 or €2 deposit.
Other facilities: Other facilities at Manchester Airport include a medical center, prayer rooms, baby-changing facilities, and a 24-hour children’s play area. The on-site Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport (tel: (0161) 490 5000; provides shower facilities. It is also possible to take tours of the airport's preserved Concorde aircraft in the Concorde Conference Centre.
Conference and business facilitiesThe Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport (tel: (0161) 490 5000;, which is served by the airport's Skylink covered walkway, houses conference space for up to 400 attendees. Conference facilities are also available in the on-site Concorde Conference Centre (tel: (0161 489 8299). Servisair lounges are located in Terminals 1 and 2, and airline-specific lounges and VIP Escape Lounges can be found in all terminals.
Disabled facilitiesThere are accessible toilets and telephones, as well as ramps and elevators throughout the terminals. All telephones are fitted with induction loops, and the desk in Terminal 1 International Arrivals is equipped with a Minicom system. There are designated spaces in all parking facilities for disabled travelers, and airport buses connecting these areas are fully accessible. Passengers requiring wheelchairs or special assistance should contact their airline at least 48 hours in advance.
