What to do in Entebbe

Bird-watch at the Botanic Gardens

Entebbe is famed for it botanic gardens, which lie on the shores of Lake Victoria. The gardens are a great spot for anyone with a passing interest in ornithology (birdwatching), since they’re inhabited by dozens of species of African birds, including Verreaux’s eagle-owls, orange weavers and red-chested sunbirds, and the black-headed gonolek.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Also known as Entebbe Zoo, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre was founded in the 1950s with the aim of rehabilitating and rehoming confiscated and injured wildlife and animals orphaned by poachers. The UWEC offers accommodation, educational tours, and is home to over 120 bird species, as well as free-roaming monkeys.

Get out on the water

Entebbe is the best starting point for anyone wanting to see more of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Tour company Wild Frontiers offers specialised tours and relaxed evening cruises with food and drink provided. Those who like to sing for their supper can go on overnight fishing trips with a local expert. Nile Perch – the largest fresh water game fish in the world – is your top target.

Visit the Ssese Islands

Located in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria, the Ssese is an archipelago consisting of 84 islands. In spite of the islands’ astounding natural beauty, they remain relatively untouched by tourists. The ferry from Nakiwogo Dock lands in Bugala, the largest of the 84 islands, though it’s advisable to head to Banda – a more laidback, scenic option.

Spot a rare shoebill

Visit the Mabamba wetlands, home to the rare shoebill (also known as the whalehead or shoe-billed stork). Guided canoe tours take you into the heart of the wetlands, through papyrus reeds, and out onto the expansive waters. Here, it’s possible to catch a glimpse of these strange-looking creatures.

Founded in 1998, the island is a sanctuary for chimps that cannot be returned to the wild.
