Emirates Skywards: Earning Miles and Miles Accelerator

There are 37 FAQs for Emirates Skywards: Earning Miles and Miles Accelerator.

What is a fare and how is it different from a ticket?

The fare is the price paid for a ticket. The fare has an effect on the conditions and restrictions that will apply to the ticket.

What are base Miles?

Base Miles are the standard Miles earned on any Emirates ticket. The benchmark for base Miles is an Economy Class Flex ticket, which represents 100% of base Miles.

Using our Miles Calculator, you can view the total Miles earned on a particular ticket. Total Miles are made up of base Miles for the zone/s you are flying in plus the various cabin class and tier bonuses on offer.

Do I earn Miles whatever the fare type?

Yes you do. We remain one of the few frequent flyer programmes to offer reward Miles on all fares, which applies to both Skywards Miles and Tier Miles.

What are the differences between 'Skywards Flex' and 'Skywards Saver' fares?

A Skywards Saver fare is an Emirates fare with any of the following conditions:
(a) eligibility restrictions (such as fares for students, seniors, or companions)
(b) a limited period in which you can purchase the ticket
(c) limited seat availability and restricted conditions (such as minimum/maximum stay, flight restrictions or advance purchase)

If you are taking a trip which is booked as a single journey but involves flying with different carriers that include Emirates, then Saver fare conditions will apply.

Saver fares earn 50% of base Miles – this applies to both Skywards Miles and Tier Miles.

A Skywards Flex fare does not include any eligibility or purchase restrictions. This type of fare also earns you more Miles than a Saver fare. Flex fares earn 100% of base Miles – this applies to both Skywards Miles and Tier Miles. In addition, if you want to upgrade to a higher class, Flex tickets can be upgraded for fewer Skywards Miles.

What is a featured fare?

A featured fare is a fare advertised for a shorter time than usual, which has restrictions such as limited validity and travel dates, usually dependent on the departure airport.

A featured fare earns you Miles at the same rate as a Saver fare.

Why are the Miles I earn based on the type of fare purchased?
We recognise that different customers can pay different fares while travelling in the same cabin, so when we calculate the Miles you earn, we take into account the type of fare as well as the distance flown.
How do I identify a Skywards Flex or Skywards Saver fare after I purchase a ticket?

You can view a detailed Miles breakdown for any ticket by logging into your Emirates Skywards account and checking your Upcoming Travel. Details can also be found in Manage a Booking.

The fare type is often also displayed under ‘additional information’ on your eticket.

How do I identify a Skywards Flex or Skywards Saver fare before I purchase a ticket?

When searching for flights on emirates.com, all the fares displayed indicate whether they are Skywards Flex or Skywards Saver fares, along with any applicable Miles Accelerator bonuses. You can only see this information when you are logged into your Emirates Skywards account.

If you only want to view  Flex fares, check the Skywards Flex fares tick box when you search for flights on the Make a Booking page.  Please note: Flex fares  will only be displayed if Flex tickets are available on the route you have selected.

Does cabin class determine whether a fare is Skywards Flex, Skywards Saver or special?

When you are searching for or booking a flight, we will advise what type of fares are available. This is not restricted by the class you choose to travel in. For example, you could have either a Flex or a Saver fare in Economy Class, Business Class or First Class. You can also have special fares in any class of travel.

What Miles bonuses do Silver, Gold or Platinum members earn?

When flying Emirates, Silver members receive 25% bonus Skywards Miles, Gold members receive 50% bonus Skywards Miles and Platinum members receive 75% bonus. The percentage is calculated from the base Miles earned on the ticket purchased.

What Miles bonuses will I get for travelling in Business Class or First Class?

If you fly Emirates Business Class or First Class, you will receive 75% and 150% bonus Miles respectively. This is applicable to both Tier Miles and Skywards Miles. The percentage is calculated from the base Miles earned on the ticket you have purchased.

If I have a mixed class or mixed fare ticket, what Miles will I receive?

If your ticket is split between different fare types, you will earn a different number of Miles for each part of your journey that is booked on a different fare. If your ticket is split between cabin classes, you will be eligible for bonus Miles on the Business Class or First Class part of your journey.

Why should I buy a Skywards Flex fare when a cheaper Skywards Saver fare is available?

It depends on what suits your needs at the time of booking. Saver fares are always cheaper than Flex fares. However, a Flex fare always earns more Skywards and Tier Miles, so can be useful if you are trying to boost your Miles to reach the next tier or save up for a reward. Flex fares can also have other benefits such as no eligibility or purchase restrictions. In addition, fewer Skywards Miles are required to upgrade a Flex ticket to a higher cabin class.

If I purchase a Skywards Flex fare, does that mean it will be free to change at any time?

If you choose to buy a Skywards Flex fare, the ‘flexibility’ usually relates to eligibility and purchase restrictions, and how you earn Skywards and Tier Miles, and not to changing your fare conditions. As every ticket is unique, it’s best to check the fare rules when making your booking.

However, if you are buying a Flex reward flight with Skywards Miles then in this case ticket changes are usually free.

When will Miles be credited to my account?

Miles are credited to your account after you’ve physically flown from your origin airport to your destination airport. They are credited in two stages, firstly when you have finished the outbound part of your trip and again when you have completed the inbound voyage. So if you fly from London to Sydney return, you are credited Miles once you arrive in Sydney and again when you return to London.

Do stopovers affect how Miles are credited?

Stopovers have no effect on the amount of Miles earned and are not counted as a destination. So, if you stopover in Dubai on your way to Sydney from London, you would still only receive your Miles credit once you arrive in Sydney.

If I don't complete my journey, when will my Miles be credited?

If you do not complete all your ticketed flights (for instance if part of your ticket is refunded or voided), we will credit Miles for any flights you have flown as soon as you submit the remainder of your ticket for cancellation or refund. An Emirates Contact Centre can assist you with this.

How do I earn Skywards Miles on my credit card?

You can collect Skywards Miles just by making purchases with your credit card. If you have an Emirates co-branded credit card with Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait, Citibank, Emirates Islamic Bank, Emirates NBD, MBNA or Standard Chartered Bank India, we will automatically credit your Emirates Skywards account with any Miles you have earned each month. If you hold a credit card with one of our other bank partners, please contact your credit card provider for more information or to ask for points to be transferred to your Emirates Skywards account.

Can I enrol family members into my account so that I can earn Skywards Miles when they travel?

If you are the principal of a Family Bonus programme, you will earn 20% of base Miles collected by nominated family members. Learn more about the Family Bonus programme.

Can Family Bonus members earn extra Tier Miles for my account?

Family Bonus members only earn Skywards Miles at the rate of 20% of base Miles plus any Business or First Class bonuses.

Are Family Bonus members entitled to excess baggage allowances or lounge access?

Only Emirates Skywards members are entitled to excess baggage allowances. Family Bonus members are not entitled to lounge access by merit of membership in the Family Bonus programme; however, Platinum members may invite family travelling with them into the airport lounge. Please see the separate FAQ on lounge access for guests. Platinum members can also nominate a spouse or partner for Gold membership and all its entitlements.

Do Family Bonus members have to travel with the principal Family Bonus account holder?

Family Bonus members do not have to be accompanied by the Family Bonus principal on flights, all they have to do is to provide their membership number or card at the time of booking or check-in. Membership cards are mailed to the Family Bonus principal once he or she has qualified for an Emirates Skywards membership card.

What is Miles Accelerator?

Miles Accelerator offers you additional bonus Skywards Miles on a special selection of flights every month throughout the year, giving you the opportunity to earn more Skywards Miles and reach your rewards even faster.

How does Miles Accelerator work?

Every month, selected flights are assigned bonus Skywards Miles. Miles Accelerator allows you to search for these flights which help you maximise the number of Skywards Miles you earn, depending on where you are planning to travel.

To qualify for Miles Accelerator bonuses, you simply need to opt in by registering online on the Miles Accelerator page and purchase a ticket within the same month. You can opt in after you buy your ticket, and also if you have bought your ticket over the phone or from a travel agent. Please note that you have to opt in before you travel.

You will automatically earn any Miles Accelerator bonuses available on your flight if you book your ticket online while logged in to your Emirates Skywards account, whether or not you have chosen to opt in to the Miles Accelerator promotion for that month.
What is ‘opting in’? Why do I have to do this to receive bonus Miles?

To ensure we can track your Miles progress and credit bonus Miles to your account, you must be opted in for a Miles Accelerator bonus before you travel. This information is then stored in your Emirates Skywards account, so that when you fly the extra Miles automatically appear in your statement. If you log in and purchase a ticket online we will automatically opt you in for those flights. If you purchase a ticket from a travel agent, you can visit emirates.com and opt in before or after you buy your ticket, as long as you do so during the month of purchase.

Why do I have to opt in every time Miles Accelerator list is updated?

Miles Accelerator offers are updated monthly. To opt in to the latest special bonuses, all you need to do is visit the site every month and conduct a quick search for the flights you are interested in.

If you are logged in to your Emirates Skywards account when you book a flight online, you will automatically earn any Miles Accelerator bonuses available on that flight, whether or not you have chosen to opt in to the Miles Accelerator promotion for that month.

Will Miles Accelerator bonus Miles be offered in addition to other bonus Miles I might earn on a flight?

Bonus Miles that you are awarded by opting in to Miles Accelerator will be credited on top of any other Skywards Miles you would normally earn, giving you the opportunity to reach your rewards even faster.

However, if you register for two or more Emirates Skywards promotions and your flight is eligible for both, then only the highest eligible Miles bonus will be counted.

Do I earn the same Miles Accelerator bonus if I have purchased a Skywards Flex or Skywards Saver fare?

Yes, any Skywards Miles you earn by opting in to Miles Accelerator are the same whether you buy a Skywards Flex or Skywards Saver ticket.

If I change my ticket, will I still be eligible for Miles Accelerator bonus?

Depending on what changes you make to your ticket, a number of different scenarios are possible. Please check the Terms & Conditions relating to Miles Accelerator for more details, or call an Emirates Contact Centre.

Can I still get bonus Miles from Miles Accelerator if I purchase a ticket over the phone or via a travel agent?

Yes you can. Just visit the Miles Accelerator page to opt in for your flight; this must be done before the end of the month in which you buy your ticket and before you travel.

Can I earn Tier Miles with Miles Accelerator?

Miles Accelerator only adds bonus Skywards Miles to your account.

I have invited 10 friends to join Emirates Skywards. Only two have joined, so why can’t I add any more?
At any given time, a maximum of 10 active nominees are allowed in the Refer a Friend promotion. Active nominees include those that have joined as a result of your invitation and those that have been invited but are yet to join. You can send a reminder email to nominees who have not joined. If a friend decides not to join, you can delete them from your list and send an invite to someone else.
When will the bonus Miles for Refer a Friend be credited to my account?
Bonus Skywards Miles will be credited to your account once the nominee has completed travel on an eligible Emirates flight within six months of enrolment and the Skywards Miles from their flight have been credited to their account.
I have nominated my wife who is already a Family Bonus member in your programme and her nomination was unsuccessful. Why?
Family Bonus members can join Emirates Skywards at any time and begin to earn their own Miles by visiting the Join Now page. However, as they are already enrolled in a different Emirates promotion, we are not able to offer you promotional bonus Miles if you nominate them through Refer a Friend.
Can I nominate my son who is 14 years old?
Due to legal consensual restrictions, children under the age of 18 cannot participate or be nominated in the Refer a Friend promotion.
Can I refer a friend in any country?
Yes, usually you can refer friends from anywhere in the world. However, please make sure you read the Terms & Conditions before nominating your friends, as some elements of the offer can vary between promotions.
Can I decide what frequent flyer number I want to earn Miles on after I have checked in or travelled?
No. You must decide which programme you wish to earn Miles on at the time of reservation or check-in for Qualifying Flights and at the time of paying for other qualifying goods or services. No changes can be made to the membership number once a member has checked-in for the first flight of an itinerary.
