What to do in Kozhikode

Watch a Theyyam ritual

Theyyam is an art form with traditions that go back thousands of years. Performances are in tribute to ancient deities and are said to ward off bad luck and illness. They are also extremely colourful, with intricate costumes and headdresses. The Sri Muthappan Temple in Kannur is renowned for its performances.

Visit Thusharagiri Waterfalls

These impressive falls are located around 50km from Kozhikode in the Western Ghats. Thusharagiri means ‘snow-capped mountain’, but while there’s no snow here, there are plenty of mountains and jungle trails to explore. You can also visit rubber, pepper and ginger plantations in the area, plus a crocodile farm.

Take a seafront stroll

As evening descends on Kozhikode, it feels like the whole town strolls down to the seafront to admire the sunset. The promenade and beach come alive with stalls selling everything from coconuts and cold drinks, to fresh fruit and spicy pickles.

Take a backwater tour

Kozhikode’s quiet waterways are still relatively unspoiled. Luxurious houseboats lazily float past green paddy fields and spice plantations along the Canoly Canal and Kallayi River, as kingfishers dart and fish jump. Try Kerala Backwaters for a tour you won’t forget.

Learn about Ayurveda

The traditional Hindu medicine system of Ayurveda is a popular wellness philosophy and form of alternative medicine. Lots of people use it to treat illnesses, stress or simply to detox and relax through massage and healthy vegetarian food. Kozhikode has plenty of places to learn more about it, such as the Rishi Ayurveda Hospital & Research Centre.

Follow in the footsteps of Vasco da Gama

See the spot where Kerala’s history changed forever. In 1498, the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama landed on Kappad Beach, opening up a vital sea route between Europe and South India. The stone monument commemorating his arrival is somewhat less impressive than India’s subsequent transformation, but the site is still hugely significant in world history.
