After being shot down, US pilot, Colonel Joseph L. Ryan is captured by Italian troops and taken to an Italian prisoner-of-war camp, run by the cruel Blackshirt Major Battaglia. After taking charge, the determined and resourceful colonel leads an escape, which requires that the prisoners to take control of a German train and propel it through Italy to Switzerland.
