However, when Hitler ordered Rommel to stand his ground in Africa, Rommel knew it was better strategy to retreat, and did so, disobeying his Führer and incurring his wrath. Becoming more and more disillusioned with Hitler, Rommel joined a plot to assassinate him, a decision that was to be his downfall.
