Emirates aiming to strike it lucky again at World Airline Bowling Championship

DUBAI, U.A.E., 30th October 2012: More than 120 international bowlers will be competing in the UAE this week as defending champions Emirates bids to retain its title at the 6th World Airline Bowling Championship (WABC). They will be representing 18 international airlines or aviation-associated companies at the WABC, which will be held at bowling centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from 1st to 3rd November.

The bowlers will compete for trophies in the Singles, Doubles, Masters and Team events, as well as the sought after World Airline Bowling Cup Champion Team accolade. Defending champions Emirates will be bidding to retain the title they won in 2008 and 2010 and will have a strong line-up, selected from its thriving bowling club of more than 200 members.

“This event gets better every year, with the number of teams and standard of play increasing all the time,” said Mohammed Al Khaja, President and Chairman of the Emirates Airline Bowling Club, which is organising and hosting the event. “The quality of the players is always very high and with the usual friendly but competitive atmosphere expected, I have no doubt we will see an exciting three days of action.

“We are proud to be hosting teams from across the world and look forward to renewing rivalries with old friends at an event which is renowned for the camaraderie between the competing teams,” added Mr Al Khaja, who is also Senior Vice President Safety and Standards with the Emirates Group.

Local interest will extend to teams from Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC), Dubai Duty Free  and Etihad, while the Far East Australasia, the Americas and Europe are also represented through Singapore Airlines, Qantas, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, SAS, Aer Lingus, KLM, Lufthansa,  British Airways, Royal Brunei Airlines, Austrian Air, Swiss International and Finnair.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 09:30 hrs on Thursday November 1st at the Dubai International bowling centre in Al Mamzar, Deira, followed by team events which run until 15.00 hrs.

Doubles events, both male and female, take place on Friday November 2nd from 10:00 hrs to 15:30 hrs at the Sheikh Khalifa International Bowling Centre, Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi. Saturday November 3rd sees the event return to Dubai International Bowling Centre and there will be singles action from the male and female players between 09:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs, while the Masters event takes centre stage from 13:30 hrs to 14:30 hrs.
