Baggage allowances for sports equipment

All sporting equipment including golf equipment, bicycles, and ski equipment
Emirates will accept sporting equipment as checked baggage and part of your standard baggage allowance.

Weight Concept

For tickets issued on or after November 15, 2014 Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300 cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule.

For tickets issued prior to November 15, 2014 items beyond 300 cm (118 inches) and up to 400 cm (157 inches) in length may be accepted in exceptional cases. Please contact your local Emirates office for details at least seven working days prior to traveling with such items. Items exceeding this limit must be referred to Emirates SkyCargo. If the free baggage allowance is exceeded, normal excess charges apply.

Piece Concept

For tickets issued on or after November 15, 2014
Total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 inches). Customers with individual items exceeding above dimensions up to 300 cm (118 inches) will be charged an additional fee. Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300 cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.

For customers with two pieces of luggage in all three classes, the total combined dimensions of both pieces should not exceed 300 cm (118 inches).

Journeys involving Canada and North America:

Customers are allowed two bags of up to 23 kg each in Economy Class, and two bags of up to 32 kg each in First Class and Business Class.

  • Excess piece:
Any extra bag exceeding the two-piece allowance, with total dimensions (L+W+H) up to 150 cm (59 inches) and weight up to 32 kg.
Charge applicable: USD 175 / CAD 175.
Note: Although the free baggage allowance is 23 kg per piece for Economy Class, if an extra piece is presented for check-in as excess baggage, the allowance permitted for this extra piece is 32 kg.
  • Oversize charge within free baggage allowance:
Any individual bag with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 150 cm (59 inches) and up to 300 cm (118 inches) and not exceeding the free baggage allowance of two pieces or not exceeding 23 kg for Economy Class customers or 32 kg for First Class and Business Class customers.
Charge applicable: USD 175 / CAD 175.
  • Excess piece and oversized baggage:
Any extra bag exceeding the two-piece allowance with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 150 cm (59 inches) and up to 300 cm (118 inches). 
Charge applicable: USD 350 / CAD 350.
  • Excess weight charge:
Applicable to Economy Class customers only. First Class and Business Class customers are allowed two bags of up to 32 kg each.
Any individual bag with total dimensions (L+W+H) up to 150 cm (59 inches), weighing more than 23 kg and up to 32 kg.
Charge applicable: USD 50 / CAD 50.
Individual items with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 300 cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.


Journeys involving South America:

Customers are allowed two bags of up to 32 kg each in all three classes.
  • Excess piece:
Any extra bag exceeding the two-piece allowance, with total dimensions (L+W+H) up to 150 cm (59 inches) and weight up to 32 kg. 
Charge applicable: USD 150 / CAD 150.
  • Oversize charge within free baggage allowance:
Any individual bag with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 150 cm (59 inches) and up to 300 cm (118 inches) and not exceeding the free baggage allowance of two pieces or not exceeding 32 kg.
Charge applicable: USD 150 / CAD 150.
  • Excess piece and oversized baggage:
Any extra bag exceeding the two-piece allowance with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 150 cm (59 inches) and up to 300 cm (118 inches). 
Charge applicable: USD 300 / CAD 300.
Individual items with total dimensions (L+W+H) over 300 cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.


For tickets issued prior to November 15, 2014
Total dimensions (length+ width+ height) of each piece must not exceed 158 cm (62 inches). For Economy Class customers with two pieces of luggage, the total combined dimensions of both pieces must not exceed 273 cm (107 inches). Customers with baggage exceeding these dimensions will be charged an additional fee.

Emirates has specific rules for certain types of sporting equipment, listed below.

Golf equipment 

For tickets issued on or after March 1, 2014, a golf bag may be carried as part of your free checked baggage allowance and will be subject to excess baggage charges if overweight. 
For tickets issued prior to March 1, 2014, one set of golf clubs and one pair of golf shoes may be carried free of charge per customer in any class of service on any Emirates flight. Customers who carry a second set of golf equipment will be charged normal excess baggage fees if it exceeds the baggage allowance.

Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA)

SCUBA equipment normally consists of diving suits, flippers, masks, snorkels, buoyancy control devices, and so on. If air bottles are also carried, they must be emptied. 

Sporting weapons and ammunition  

Firearms designed for sporting purposes, such as target pistols and rifles, air guns, safari rifles, hunting rifles, and so on may be carried as checked baggage on Emirates flights under the following conditions:

  • The firearm must be completely unloaded and, if possible, dismantled, and packed inside a suitcase or standard gun case.
  • The carriage of any type of firearms, ammunition, or explosives, including items containing explosives, must be approved by Emirates no less than three days before your flight. Please contact your nearest Emirates office to start the approval process. Please allow extra time for public holidays and weekends in your country of residence and the UAE.
  • Ammunition must be securely stored in a strong, sealed box packed inside a suitcase and surrounded by other contents. The suitcase must not bear an "Explosive" label.
  • The maximum gross weight of the ammunition carried by any single customer is 5 kg (11 lb). Customers traveling in groups must carry ammunition in their own separate bags, with no single bag carrying more than the 5 kg (11 lb) limit.

The following special conditions apply to customers wishing to carry firearms on flights into or through Dubai:

  • Customers who wish to bring firearms and ammunition into the UAE must obtain prior clearance from UAE Customs and the UAE Ministry of Defence. To obtain this clearance, customers must contact these government departments directly.
  • For transfer and transit customers who are connecting to onward flights, prior clearance to travel with firearms and ammunition must be obtained from the Dubai Airport Police Department and the Department of Civil Aviation.

Ski equipment

Ski equipment can be carried as part of your normal baggage allowance. However, in some situations additional charges may apply when checking in ski equipment. Please contact your local Emirates office for more information.

A set of snow ski equipment may consist of

  • one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles. and one pair of ski boots or
  • one snowboard and one pair of boots

A set of water ski equipment may consist of

  • one pair of standard water skis or
  • one slalom water ski.

Other sports equipment

Emirates will accept windsurf boards, surfboards, kite surfing equipment, kayaks, body boards, pole vaults, or other sporting equipment as checked baggage and part of your standard baggage allowance, provided:

  • Any sails are detachable and collapsible.
  • The equipment is appropriately packed in a hard-shell packing case. Otherwise, a Limited Release will be required.

For surfboards, the following precautions must be taken:

  • Fins should be removed, or, if they cannot be removed, should be firmly packed with polystyrene foam.
  • Both nose and tail should have bubble-wrap or neoprene foam attached for protection.
  • The rails (sides of the board) should have cardboard down the sides to absorb shock.
  • The board should be packed in a properly padded surf bag.

Should your overall baggage weight or amount exceed the normal free allowance, excess baggage rates will apply. Please contact your local Emirates office for information on excess baggage rates.
