The Ryder Cup is a truly unique tournament that connects golf fans around the world. For one extraordinary weekend, one of sport’s most individual pursuits is transformed into a team game that enraptures the golfing world as continents collide.
Emirates has been the official airline of the European Ryder Cup Team since 2010 and is proud to have been part of two famous victories.
First, in 2010, Celtic Manor in Wales saw Europe regain the Ryder Cup in dramatic fashion, winning by just a single point. The event stood out for the outpourings of emotion from golfers competing for pride rather than prize money. The biennial event is unlike any other in the passion it evokes among spectators and has elevated many of golf’s finest players to legendary status.
Then, in 2012, came “The Miracle of Medinah.” In arguably the most astonishing Ryder Cup of all time, the European Team produced a remarkable final-day comeback to clinch a victory. Needing eight points to retain the cup and eight and a half to win it outright, the Europeans produced one of the greatest performances in Ryder Cup history, winning eight and tying one of the 12 singles matches. Among emotional scenes at the Medinah Country Club on the outskirts of Chicago, European captain José María Olazábal dedicated the win to his late compatriot Seve Ballesteros to cap a remarkable weekend.
In addition to the Ryder Cup, Emirates is a proud supporter of a number of other golf events around the world, including UBS Hong Kong Open, Dubai World Championship, BMW International Open 2012, Japan Open, WGC-HSBC Champions, Emirates Australian Open Championship, Australian PGA Championship, Austrian Golf Open, Avantha Masters, Ballantine’s Championship, Barclays Singapore Open, Maybank Malaysian Open, Thailand Open, Irish Open and Alstom Open de France.
