What to do in Lyon

Climb Fourvière Hill

This hill overlooking Lyon has some of the most magnificent urban panoramas in France. Take the funicular up to the basilica, then stroll down to the Old Town. The area comes alive during the Fête des Lumières in December, and the Nuits Des Fourvière in summer, which features live music in the Roman outdoor theatre.

Cycle around Lyon’s squares

East of the Saône, Lyon’s narrow streets give way to grand metropolitan squares. Bellecour has fine statues, high-end shopping streets and art galleries, Les Célestins has a famous theatre, and Des Terreaux has the City Hall and the Musée Des Beaux Arts. There’s also Place des Jacobins, so hire a bicycle – try Vélo’v – to take them all in.

Le Café des Fédérations (French)

Dining out in Lyon is as much about the city's rustic bouchons (taverns), which offer warm welcome and hearty food, as it is about the Michelin-starred restaurants. Of all the bouchons, Le Café des Fédérations is among the best, serving up local specialties such as quenelle – a mixture of creamed fish, chicken or meat.
