Emirates and Qantas

There are 29 FAQs for Emirates and Qantas.

What are the key benefits of the partnership?
We are creating the world’s leading airline partnership which opens up an extensive network to our customers and provides a seamless travel experience. Emirates customers have one-stop access to most parts of the combined Qantas and Emirates network in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. More destinations will be available once additional regulatory approvals have been confirmed.
What does interim authorisation allow Emirates and Qantas to do?
Interim authorisation means that Emirates and Qantas can now coordinate on pricing, sales and capacity on codeshare routes (which currently exclude services to/from destinations such as New Zealand, where regulatory approval is still pending).
Are there still outstanding approvals which are needed?
The Australian Competition and Consumer Comission’s interim authorisation currently does not extend to Trans-Tasman services, and we’re also waiting for regulatory approvals in other jurisdictions, such as New Zealand.

How can I book Emirates codeshare flights?

Emirates customers can book codeshare flights, subject to availability, through their preferred travel agent, Emirates Contact Centres and emirates.com.

Can I book Qantas Premium Economy Class seats on an Emirates code?
Sorry, currently you can only book Qantas Economy Class, Business Class or First Class seats.
How will I know if the flight is operated by Emirates or Qantas?
Emirates flights in the 5000 series are operated by Qantas, and Qantas 8000 series flights are operated by Emirates. The airline that you will fly with will be confirmed during the booking process.
Can I make changes to a Qantas-operated flight via emirates.com or an Emirates Contact Centre?
Yes. Changes can be made via emirates.com and through Emirates Contact Centres.
Why are there pre-seating charges for some Qantas flights?
Qantas applies a charge to passengers wishing to choose seats on international flights, with the exception of First Class and Business Class passengers and Emirates Skywards and Qantas Frequent Flyer members in tiers Silver and above, and all passengers who select a seat in the last 24 hours prior to departure. To select and pay for a seat with Qantas, visit Manage a Booking on qantas.com.

There is no charge for selecting a seat on domestic Qantas flights – however, seat selection is only possible on certain domestic routes.

For routes where seat selection is not possible, you can select a preference for window or aisle seats.

Passengers travelling with infants on Qantas flights cannot select seats, and will automatically be assigned seating in bassinet rows if possible.
Are halal meals offered on Qantas flights?
Customers travelling on Qantas between Australia and London Heathrow, via Dubai, will automatically receive halal meals.

Customers travelling on any other Qantas routes as part of an Emirates codeshare or redemption booking, including both international and domestic Australian routes, will need to pre-order halal meals on emirates.com.
Will Qantas and Emirates be offering the same fare structure on codeshare services?
Emirates and Qantas are working on joint fare structures across the permitted areas of cooperation. The new fare structures will be progressively rolled out from early April.
When I book a codeshare flight can I still apply for a UAE visa online?
You can apply for UAE visas on emirates.com with codeshare flights, provided you hold an Emirates 176 ticket and the journey into and out of Dubai carries the EK flight reference.
Is there a new ticketing process for codeshare flights?
No. Normal ticketing procedures apply.
Can I check in online for Qantas flights on the Emirates website?
Please note that online check-in is not available if the first flight in your itinerary is not an Emirates flight. This applies to all codeshare flights not operated by Emirates.

If the first flight of your journey is operated by Qantas, you can check in online via the Qantas website.
When travelling on a codeshare flight, can I check in at both Emirates and Qantas counters?
No. If you are travelling on an Emirates-operated flight you need to check in at the Emirates counter, and for Qantas-operated flights at the Qantas counter.
Will I only have to check in once when my journey includes both Emirates and Qantas-operated flights?
Yes. If your itinerary includes both Emirates and Qantas services, and the first flight of your journey is operated by Emirates, you will be checked in right through to your final destination. You will also be issued with boarding passes for all sections of your journey at your departure airport.
Do Emirates baggage allowance rules apply to my Qantas-operated flight?

If you are on a Qantas-operated flight (with a QF code), Qantas baggage allowances will apply. This includes QF flights redeemed using your Skywards Miles, and connecting Australian domestic flights. However, if you are on a codeshare flight (with an EK flight number, but operated by Qantas) then Emirates baggage allowances will apply. Learn more about Qantas baggage allowances at qantas.com

Emirates will not be changing any of the free baggage allowances including those for infants or sporting equipment. We are also offering greater discounts on online pre-paid baggage discounts from 20% to 30%. Please see the table below for rate in USD per kg if payment is made at the airport:

Will I receive the same baggage allowances on domestic flights as international flights?
When you transfer from an international flight to a Qantas domestic flight, or vice versa, within 24 hours on the same ticket the international allowance will apply to both sectors. If you are travelling on separate tickets you need to present both tickets when checking in your baggage. Some exclusions and restrictions apply to Qantas Link flights to and from Lord Howe Island, Olympic Dam and Mount Hotham.
Will Emirates Skywards members be offered additional checked baggage allowance on Qantas-operated flights?
Existing Emirates Skywards additional baggage allowances will be honoured on Qantas-operated flights.
If I choose to fly with Qantas from Dubai to Australia, can I still use the Emirates lounges in Dubai?
You can use the Emirates lounges in Dubai when flying with Qantas if you:

  • are travelling in First Class or Business Class, or
  • are an Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold or Silver member, or
  • are a Qantas Platinum One, Platinum or Gold Frequent Flyer member.
If I am eligible for lounge access and departing from an airport with both an Emirates lounge and a Qantas lounge, can I choose either lounge?
We recommend that you use the lounge of the operating airline to ensure convenient gate proximity and access to boarding calls and other flight information.
As an Emirates Skywards member travelling on the Qantas domestic network, will I have access to Qantas domestic lounges in Australia?
Emirates Skywards Gold members will have access to Qantas Club Domestic Lounges in Australia. Emirates Skywards Platinum members will have access to Qantas Domestic Business Lounges (where available) and Qantas Club Domestic Lounges in Australia.
Emirates currently offers a Chauffeur-drive service to its First Class and Business Class passengers in many parts of the world. If I fly with Qantas in First Class or Business Class on an Emirates codeshare or a redemption ticket, will I still get this service?
Chauffeur-drive will be available to Emirates customers flying on Qantas as part of an Emirates codeshare in the following locations: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Dubai and London. Chauffeur-drive will not be available for any flights operated by Qantas between Asia and Australia.

For Emirates Skywards members redeeming miles on Qantas flights, Qantas rules will apply in each location – please visit qantas.com for details of where Chauffeur-drive is available and to book this service.
How do I make a Chauffeur-drive service request for Qantas-operated flights?
You can book Chauffeur-drive for flights operated by both Emirates and Qantas under Manage Your Booking on emirates.com. For flights operated by Qantas, you can also book Chauffeur-drive through qantas.com.
When I arrive in Australia with Emirates and need to transfer to a domestic flight with Qantas, where do I go?
If you are transferring from an Emirates international flight to a domestic flight you will need to clear customs and collect your baggage before you go to the domestic terminal. Some international airports have domestic transfer desks that allow you to check your bags in for your domestic flight before proceeding to the domestic terminal.
If there is any delay or disruption to my flight, who should I contact for help?
Both airlines will be made aware of any delays or disruption. The airline that you are flying with will keep you informed of the situation, and help you rebook if necessary.
Will Qantas offer Dubai Connect (STPC) for Emirates customers?
Dubai Connect (STPC) services will be provided by Qantas in Dubai subject to eligibility, and you can book this under Manage Your Booking on emirates.com or qantas.com.
