In the air and on the ground, the Emirates Group is committed to acting sustainably in the interests of our customers, our business, the natural environment and the over 120 destinations we serve worldwide.
The Group has much to be proud of environmentally, including our award-winning Wolgan Valley conservation resort, our large industrial and office recycling efforts and, most importantly, our young and advanced aircraft fleet.
The greatest environmental difference Emirates can make is through the development, selection and operation of our aircraft. We already have the most fuel efficient aircraft in the sky. Our emissions are more than 25 per cent lower than the IATA global fleet average thanks to a young fleet of aircraft averaging just over six years and an average fuel burn of 4.12 litres for every 100 passenger kilometres – better than most modern small cars. With our new A380s and our green workhorse, the Boeing 777, we will continue to substantially reduce fuel consumption and emissions for all Emirates customers.
The Emirates Group moves our customers and cargo over a geographically-central hub. With an efficient hub-based operation, fewer flights are needed to transport the same number of people. On long-haul flights, aircraft capacity is better used. With more efficient load factors, there is a drop in environmental impact and CO2 emissions for our passengers.
Our commitment to the environment began well before it was fashionable when we sponsored the creation of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. We have since opened a unique conservation property in Australia, the Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa. As part of the Emirates Group, dnata has led many of our environmental initiatives, including recycling, waste management and community partnerships. Emirates Flight Catering is recycling over 1.3 million kilograms of materials per year, and our engineering facilities are recycling a wide range of aircraft components from interior refurbishment projects. Our flight operation professionals are pioneering ways to fly more efficient routes to save fuel and reduce emissions.
We can and will do more to ensure our environmental performance is always improving, including the adoption of higher standards in fuel burn, onboard weight reduction, procurement, resource consumption and recycling. On the ground, this means more efficient use of energy and water.
All of us can look for ways to be more sustainable and eco-efficient. Let’s embrace this important challenge.
